Guest guest
I would just like to take a minute here and remind people that this is a website about implementing and support of scd. Other diets shouldn't be discussed for the express purpose of new people being confused. There seems to be quite a few new people at this time and although anyone can read whatever blog they want, there is food being mentioned that is not scd legal. Please beware. I am saying this in a very kind way. Anyone can take any discussion offline and continue it there. Katy _____________________________________________________________Get your fix. Guest guest
Karina, Welcome to the list, though, as I often say, glad to have you, but sorry you needed to find us. I understand about undiagnosed IBS and overweight issues. I've lost 180 pounds on SCD, and have 100 more to go -- and things have stalled. I went through a very bad phase the end of November and into the beginning of January after my formerly reasonable PCP jumped all over me and told me that I could lose weight if I really wanted too -- I just had to stop stuffing my face. Oh, and arthritis and several joint injuries had nothing to do with my hip, knee and ankle pain -- it was all my obesity (and refusal to stop stuffing my face), and it would clear up if I just lose a little weight. Being offered food you can't have is really difficult. It often feels as if everyone around you is trying to deliberately sabotage you. One advantage to these lists is that you have support -- 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There's bound to be an SCDer around who can at least sympathize, even if they don't know the answer to your question. It IS possible to eat out, but possibly not the best idea in the early weeks on SCD: you have to learn by heart what you can and can't have. You also have to learn how to tell a waiter or waitress what you can and can't have, and how to be strong enough to send the food back if they don't make it correctly. (The first time it happened to me, I wasn't strong enough. I ate the illegals, and had blow-out diarrhea as a result.) Something you might want to consider is making sure you have plenty of good SCD snacks available, so that if a case of munchies hits you, you have it available. I particularly recommend NON-sweet stuff, like an easy guacamole or a ranch dressing with plenty of good fats in it. It may sound weird for someone who wants to lose weight to recommend eating fat when everyone, especially the medical profession screams and throws up their hands and says, " Fat is evil, all fat is bad, no fat is imperative. " But I can tell you that balancing sweets with good protein and fat will reduce your cravings. You've already gotten some great advice from some of the other list members. Katy Katy, Thanks for reminding people of this. <grin> It's so very easy for things to go off-topic (thread-drift, we used to call it in another on-line community) because we are all researching things all the time, and finding something which we think is of importance, well, the natural reaction is share it with our friends and family -- because that's what the folks on these lists become -- friends and family! However, as you pointed out, we do need to yank our own chains occasionally, and drag ourselves back on topic. Which is SCD, the implementation thereof in all sorts of conditions and for all sorts of issues. Whether it's my overweight and IBS, Tina's underweight, or Kim's gastric mobility and Sphincter of Oddi issues -- SCD is a big part of the answer. And that's what we need to focus on. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

You're always revising how to deal with it based on your experience at the prior restaurant. Mara, That's fer darn sure! I just created a folder in our files and uploaded a ..RTF file with my personal Can / Can't East list. (For those who would like a card-sized version of the list this based on, go to http://www.scdiet.org/4faq/abbrevfoodlist.pdf.) If the original card works for you at your current level, great. <g> Otherwise, you can do what I did: create your own. I found it was very helpful when I did the Surrey International Writers Conference at which all the meals were prepared. I met beforehand with the chefs, gave them several copies of my list, and although they tried to starve me (forgot I wasn't filling up with pasta, rice, and bread), they also didn't serve me any illegals. Waiters have a tendency to be less panicked when they have your list of do-s and don'ts already written out and don't have to remember it all. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
