Hi Sandy

I have had peridontal disease for about 15 years (been on SCD 4+ years), but have found that my gums have really improved the longer I've been on SCD. So as my gut ecology has improved, my mouth ecology has improved too. I still need to stick with my dental routine (flossing, brushing my teeth 3 times a day, using an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day) and see my dental hygeniest every 3 months for a good cleaning. But I haven't needed a root canal due to an abcess or needed a bout of deep (i.e., painful) gum cleaning for over a year -- and previously I was dealing with these things every 3 to 4 months.

Good thing, too, as my body has built up a sensitivity to epinephrine, which makes dental anesthetics difficult. But even more importantly, my gums are no longer in a pitiful state.

I didn't worry about whether an item was SCD-legal or not, as I knew I wouldn't swallow any of the items my dentist uses or recommends. I just pay attention to the contents to avoid an allergic or sensitivity response. I can't stop doing the extra dental hygiene work, even though there are nights when my nausea is bad (I have functional upper GI disorders) and the last thing I want to do is work on my teeth for 10 minutes. But I stick with it, because I don't want to risk going backwards and getting a return of peridontal disease symptoms.

Once you have peridontal disease, you have it -- it becomes merely a matter of managing the condition, staying alert and continually working to keep it from worsening. Sort of like my GI disorders! I should have taken better care of my teeth and gums when I was younger. But at least I've significantly improved in this respect the longer I'm on SCD.

.............My idea was that I should just start brushing everyday, twice a day..and floss...and see what happens with that! I was just wondering if there were people out there who may see some gut problems happening because of what's going on in my mouth and that these things could actually help. Thanks for any insite, sandyuc since 2004scd 2 months and constipated?

My story is similar and I recently had to have a denture reconfigured. The dentist complimented me on healthy gums. I do soak the denture in a commercial solution. The one with just baking soda was discontinued, but I rinse  it out many times. I brush with baking soda and will check with near and dear to see how my breath is.Hi Sandy I have had peridontal disease for about 15 years (been on SCD 4+ years), but have found that my gums have really improved the longer I've been on SCD.  Carol F.Celiac, SCD 8 years,MCS, Latex Allergyhttp://www.celiac.com/authors/143/Carol-Frileghhttp://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/gfcf-diet/sc-diet.htm
