Guest guest
Mike & Mindy, When I went into my three month appointment with my surgeon at the end of April they said that we could eat pretty much anything we wanted to and that that was dangerous. We needed to limit ourselves to only 20-30 minutes of eating, follow the no drink 15 minutes before, during, 45 minutes after meals and start taking calcium supplements in addition to our vitamin supplements. They also said that we shouldn't consume ANY liquids other than water although they seemed to relax on crystal light a little. Basically no sugary drinks, no soups that weren't chunky (like chili), no milk, no yogurt smoothies and no protein shakes. The no protein shakes was sort of surprising to me. Their argument was that while it provided you with protein it didn't really fill you up much because it wasn't a solid in your pouch. Well I don't know about that. Maybe I made my shakes too big or too thick but they always seemed to fill me up a great deal. Anyway, now I don't drink protein shakes (never did drink many in the first place). I just eat a lot of chicken, cottage cheese, cheese and tuna fish. I figure I'm getting 60-70g of protein a day in. I'm probably having more than the surgeon recommended for calories (they recommended 1000-1200 and I'm probably taking in 1500 or so) but I figure before surgery I was taking in 1500 per meal and sometimes a snack. Another weird thing is my PCP, after seeing me for a physical and my telling her that all the plumbing was fine, recommended I eat more vegetables/fiber and drink even more than 64oz of water. Crazy doctors. I'm supposed to eat massive amounts of protein, vegetables, fiber, drink 80+oz of water and all that inside of about 16 hours in the day, with a small pouch, the no drink while eating rules, the calorie limits, etc. On the bright side I used to be (and maybe still am) slightly bi-polar with racing thoughts/boredom which probably caused me to eat more. Now I just apply my nervousness and free time to trying to figure out where I am in the day as far as consumption of water/food is and where I need to be to get enough in for the day. It keeps me busy. > I purchased a Power Bar, Protein Plus Carb Select bar. This is an > example but can be true of almost every low carb food out there these > days. My question is when you read the lable, it sais there is 30g of > carbs in the bar, but then states that when you take out the fiber and > the sugar alcohol that there is only 2g of " impact carbs " in the bar. > > What does this really mean, and being post op and trying to limit my > carbs, is this an ok thing to eat?
