Guest guest
I would send my child to the school only for 2-3 hours a week, then continue with the private therapies. That's what we're doing now with our child. She attends school only 2 days a week for the socialization with the bulk of her schooling being done at home under the guidance of an ABA person and she's flying. This also leaves room for swimming, music therapy, and just being a kid. I was accused by the schools of being a parent who wanted too much control - gosh darn right - which I took as a huge compliment. To leave your child's education in the hands of anyone else is doing them a disservice. Get involved and stay involved. Take control and stay in control. Hoping that someone else will do a good job is not a good choice. As a former marine drill instructor friend of mine always used to say"Hope is not a strategy." Guest guest
This is really shocking to me! I cannot imagine what a child will gain with only 2-3 hours a week of school. Remember the program at Baudhuin is to prepare the child for kinder garden. They have a program based on language and social skills where our children are lacking. I can understand wanting your kid to be kid, but they are at a greater disadvantage when they go to an elementary school without the basic skills. My son has progressed greatly thanks to Baudhuin, and all the support they give not only the child the family as well. That being said I also do therapy and different activities with my children after school and on weekends. You cannot compare the progress with a private ABA therapist to the progress children will make in a school environment with their peers. The learn to take turns, imitate and other appropriate skills with peers. Many people that only do private therapy say that the child would act a certain way with their therapist or another adult, but do not act the same with their peers. I am all for therapy and extra curricular activities as a supplement to a full time preschool program. Has your child been in a program at Baudhuin? By your comments make me think that your child has NOT. You can be a a parent with control because I am one of them and I have my child in Baudhuin, they are very receptive to parent input. What better than to have access to so many people that have dealt with Autistic children, not only teachers and support staff, but also parents. If I had all the experience and expertise that the staff at Baudhuin has maybe I would also agree that I would do a better job than a whole team of professionals. Since I don't, I try to learn as much as possible from the experts and help my child. Just my opinion!
