hi and welcome back

please wait a while if you can. if i had my choice, i would have waited a

few more months at least but some things you dont have much control

over.....no, i still didnt figure out how this happens.

i was almost 4 months post op. i continued to lose another 20 lbs and just

over the past month or so started to gain. i am 30 wks and have gained

about 5 lbs. i dont think thats too bad since the baby weighed almost 3 at

last ultrasound 2 weeks ago. i am about 50-55 lbs from goal....i would be

happy to lose another 30 though. i think those tables are too low for me.

i havent weightd 160 lbs since i was in the 3rd grade ha,ha,ha.

what do you mean by how my stomach was getting bigger? eating wise, i eat

all day so i can get enough calories in. i dont think i have stretched

anything and if i have, not too bad. i am sure that i will continue to do

well after i have the baby.

what do i wish i knew??? i wish i knew how this happened....seriously,

after years of infertility and being told that i would never have a baby of

my own and bam....all of a sudden i have this to deal with. i am not

complaining because this is the best thing to ever happen to me but i wish i

would have listened to everyone and would have been more careful.

good luck to you in whatever you decide.

julie

new, but been here before!

Hello Ladies

I just joined again and cant wait to get back into hearing about all the

babies and ladies again.

My name is and I live in Florida with my hubby and daughter Chloe' (2

1/2 yrs old) I joined this list when researching WLS to make sure that

having more babies was safe and possible.

I had surgery on 2/18/00 and have lost 80 to date. I started at 367 and Im

down to 286.5......I am 5'3 and need to be in the 145 range, so another

140ish to go. I am currently not pregnant, that I know of, but would like

to

be as soon as it is possible. My daughter however tells me there is a

sister

in my tummy, so we will find out soon (this week) if she is telling the

truth.....ha ha ha.

Anyway, I just wanted to join again now that I am on the other side and

wanted to hear from those who got pregnant after surgery....by mistake or on

purpose or however else it happens (lol) and find out somethings like:

1. did you lose weight while pregnant? can you?

2. did you gain, how much?

3. how far were you from goal?

4. how much did you have to eat?

5. how was your stomach getting bigger?

6. tell me what you wish you new!

Thanks and I hope to hear lots from you all!

Thanks. So let me understand, your dr did not tell you that fertility would

likely return after surgery and have you be on 2 forms of b/c for at least 1

yr? Thats what mine told me. I have a 2 1/2 yr old (due to losing weight

on optifast I was " fertile " ) and then nothing for 2 1/2 yrs now, no luck.

But since I started looking into surgery I have been using b/c even though I

am/was infertile. Since surgery I have used 2 forms, the pill and condoms.

There have been 2 mos where I messed up my b/c pills due to forgetfullness

from lack of b12 shot.....but thank God I did not get pg as I was using the

condom still.

About the stomach thing, I guess I mean your new pouch and also your whole

tummy......do you look pg or just fat? I always just looked fat when

pg......not pg. I cant wait until I actually look like there is a baby there

not fat. I had the panniculectomy so my tummy is flat now and I love it. IF

I get pg I will show for sure.

I am really torn because Chloe will be 3 in Nov. and if I wait until my 1 yr

to get pg she will be almost 4 by the time the baby comes. I sorta wanted

them closer together, but really do need to lose more weight.

Also, did I read right, you lost 20 pounds while pg? In how long? Now you

gained 5? plus the 20 back? or just 5? That is so interesting to me......I

gained like 75 with chloe.....ooops! lol

Well I will let you go and keep you all posted on whether the stork is coming

despite my 2 forms of b/c...ha ha ha

wow...that was kinda harsh. I wouldn't consider anyone to be

selfish...especially if they were not able to conceive before.... if they get

pregnant after this surgery, BEFORE the year or not, I say good for them and

congrats!!! I am only 7 months post op, 130 lbs. and wearing a size 5/6, the

healthiest I have EVER been and ya know what? My husband and I are trying

NOW! Who's to say something couldn't happen with a fetus if I tried at two

years post op. I think that you're taking a chance with everything in

life, regardless. I could care less what others have to say about it. Just

like the people who didn't agree with my having surgery....MY body, MY life!

So, there's my two cents worth. Take it or leave it!

Thanks Lenore.

I am 31 and I personally want to wait a little longer though being preg now

is also appealing. I dont think it is selfish and that statement is a little

harsh to say. Thinking of someone else is NOT selfish I thought, but

thinking of yourself is....

So I do have plenty of time, but really do not want my daughter to be that

far apart in age from siblings (if God blesses us again) When I got prg with

Chloe I started at about 290ish and gained up to about 360-370....OUCH! I

had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, nothing wrong at all, but did have a c

section after a full night of labor cause they did not want to wait any

longer. I am much healthier now than I was then, all I ate was crap, burger

king and candy, soda, etc... and did not excercise at all. I do now.

Thanks for writing.

DO NOT GET PREGNANT NOW! You need to wait at least a year or whatever your

surgeon tells you. Right now you should be concentrating on losing weight

and getting healthy. On yourself. If you are pregnant you have to

concentrate on someone else. So make sure you are on birth control. If not

you are just being selfish.

I must disagree with such a strong statemrnt. everyone's case is

individual & you must consider all the factors that effect yours. I got

preg at 9 mos post op and do NOT consider myself selfish at all. In fact

I am healthier than I have been in many years & the baby is helping my

motivation to be so, esp re exercise. You did not mention your age which

was a major factor for my not waiting longer. My surgeon did give me the

go ahead because my weight, labs & general health indicated good stuff. In

consulting with several surgeons and OBs I have heard wait anywhere form 6

months to 2 years. But it really has to do with your rate of loss and

goals. If I were you I would wait a while more so you can get down to a

healthy weight so your body does not have to be taxed by the pregnancy.

That is why many choose to have surgery b4 getting preg. At 5.5 mos I have

gaines 4 pounds, all my labs are good and baby looks great at amnio and

sonograms. At 41 with no kids waiting longer may have caused other

problems for my family in the long run.

I stand by my statement -- if you do not wait a year or whatever your

surgeon tells you then you are being selfish. End of story. There are too

many things that can go wrong with pregnancy in general let alone after a

surgery like this. Your surgeon gave you the go ahead to get pregnant at 9

months post op. Fine. You listened to what your surgeon told you. However if

you are hell bent on getting pregnant without waiting a year (or whatever

your surgeon tells you) then you are being selfish. You are putting another

life at risk. One of the women on this list posted a very complete message

about everything that can happen to someone who gets pregnant too soon after

WLS. There are nutritional, physical, emotional and mental concerns that

must be taken into consideration. If you are going to put those aside

because you are ignorant or impatient then you are being selfish. It is

posted at least once every two weeks on OSSG that after this surgery you are

more fertile and hence should be on birth control after this surgery -- even

if you were infertile to begin with.

So I stand by my statement. Getting pregnant before your surgeon gives you

permission is tantamount to putting your wants before a baby's needs --

hence you are being selfish.

it would be your body your life BUT you also have to consider a baby's life.

If you decide to TRY and get pregnant before your surgeon gives you then I

do think it is selfish. I know it sounds harsh HOWEVER I honestly believe it

because there has been posts about the problems that babies conceived too

early can have. In addition to all the problems that having a baby could

bring anyone. Why add more risks because you don't have patience to get

clearance from your surgeon?

Actually it is Rita that has the information about what happens during

pregnancy too soon after WLS. She posted it previously. I hope she can post

it again. Sorry was thinking of something else when I posted her name. Rita

can you help out here by reposting that information about pregnancy after

WLS?

I can imagine it is heartbreaking to lose a baby however I stand by what I

said. According to BTC, those who get pregnant less than a year out have a

90% HIGHER chance of miscarriage than those who wait. It is foolish to go

against what your surgeon's advice is just because you can't wait. There is

a great deal that could go wrong due to the stress on one's body after

surgery and during pregnancy. If your surgeon tells you to wait a year then

you should wait a year. Doing anything else is foolhardy. You may disagree

as is your right but I for one will NEVER encourage anyone to make such a

selfish choice as going against their doctor/surgeon's advice about waiting

just because they are either ignorant or impatient. It may be hard to wait

but it would be harder if you rushed into it and something happened to the

baby because of stupidity. Women who have WLS have made a choice -- they

should be able to abide by what ever comes with that choice -- which means

listening to the surgeon when it comes to waiting to get pregnant. If your

surgeon has cleared you to get pregnant before 1 year out then fine. By all

means listen. However, you have a responsibility to follow through on the

choices you have made. If you have researched WLS and know going into it

that your doctor wants you to wait a year then you have a responsibility to

take steps to prevent pregnancy for a year.

I have noticed too many women being stupid and deciding that just because

they WANT to get pregnant they are going to go against their doctor's

instructions and try soon -- or just not take any precautions at all because

they don't think they can get pregnant. And yes I think that is foolhardy.

And stupid. And selfish. Because not only do they jeopardize their own

health by going against their surgeons but they also risk the health of an

unborn child. Why? because they were either too ignorant or too impatient to

listen to their doctor.

I am glad your sister's baby was born healthy and truthfully I don't care if

you think I am rude. I think you were foolish and stupid to ignore your

doctor. That is all I have to say.

This list is a support group. In my opinion it is the best, I am

constantly impressed by how people help each other out here and how warmly

I feel to " strangers " as a result of it. YOur opinions like everyone's are

helpful to people who are relearning as they go thru this process. I

think, and others are just asking that you share your opinions without the

judgements and derogatory terms to others whose situations you are not

fully abreast of. Today you have used the words " foolish, stupid, selfish,

ignorant and impatient. " Can you not share your experiences and the

knowledge you have gained with out putting others down? Again, it is a

support group, let's try to keep that in mind.

,

Do you have the citation for this information? I would be curious to see

the statistical significance since it is virtually impossible to know

whether a miscarriage is related to surgery or not and there are very few

of us who have gone thru this to date. Also miscarriages could be related

to other comorbidities of obesity.

Also, being totally stressed out and worried about conception and pregnancy

may be just as dangerous or worse than getting preg early post op.

This information was given to me in in a phone call with my dietician at

BTC. She said that after surgery women who get pregnant have an 85-90%

higher chance of miscarriage than those who have waited a year. If you would

like you can call BTC at their 1800 number and ask them. That is what I am

going by.

Okay, okay... simmer down... : )

I remember my surgeon telling me that we needed to be extra-careful after

surgery because there was a good chance I'd be extra-fertile. We had been

married for seven years and I had been completely infertile to that point,

so it sounded hilarious and unbelievable to me, but my dh and I took his

word for it and abstained from intercourse for a year (we don't use other

forms of birth control due to personal religious convictions... no slam on

anyone who does use bc... it's just our own personal thing). It got really

difficult after a few months, but my main thing wasn't that I wanted to get

pg... I honestly didn't believe I could... I just enjoy sex and I resented

having to do without it!! My dh didn't want to back down from our decision,

though, so we stuck with it.

I don't know why I brought that up!! Just blathering, I guess.

This *is* a support group... and an informational one, also. None of us here

are doctors, I don't think... unless there's one or two lurking... so

nothing said here should be taken as the final word. I think that, in

general, we can agree that perhaps conception during any period of rapid

weight loss might not be OPTIMAL... but there are those who become pg

inadvertently, and I don't wish to scare any of them away because they

*definitely* need support and encouragement.

That also being said, everyone is entitled to their convictions, opinions

and strong beliefs (I have a few, myself!)... and I don't moderate the list,

so I don't choose to prevent anyone from speaking their mind/heart...

We don't all need to agree, nor do we need to become ruffled when people

disagree. Take it all in... do your homework on your own... talk to your own

doctor... weigh your pros and cons and come up with your own decision based

on your own research and your own family's needs. I'm not going to beat up

on anyone for a decision they've already made OR for a happy " accident " ...

what is, IS... what hasn't happened yet can be decided upon with good

information.

I love all you guys!! Let's be understanding of one another... don't forget,

a pg woman has like 400 times more hormones flooding her body. I think

that's what my Lamaze instructor said. Anyway, that's bound to create some

strong emotional ups and downs.

Today you have used the words " foolish, stupid, selfish,

Thank you Lenore

This is basically what I am trying to say!

I was not trying to start a flame war or anything I just had to say

something about this as I feel like it is very personal as I started trying

early. I had the VBG which never has much of a rapid weight loss period.

As for my sister it was the same.

Anyhow thank you again!

If you were to go back and re-read my post you would see that I DID NOT go

against my DR's orders! He said " 1 year or when rapid weight loss slows

down " I said I never had a rapid period!!!

I started to reply to you earlier but had to cool down so I wouldn't say

anything rude.

I started trying to conceive this one at 6 months post-op.....my DR said to

wait 1 year or when the rapid weight loss stopped.

I conceived when I was 10 months post-op. I had lost 2 babies in a row

(prior to WLS) and was heartbroken.....I was getting up every morning to my

3 year old daughter asking for a new baby. My heart could not take the

wait.

I never had a rapid weight loss period and have managed very well.

My sister conceived at 5 months post-op (planed pregnancy) and was fine

threw the whole time...baby was very healthy and weighted in at 8p 4 oz.

I think it is very rude of you to imply that theses who got PG to soon were

foolish!!!! Many have, weather it was on planed or by accident they do not

need anyone telling them they were foolish!

I don't know you so I don't know your history but to loose a baby and then

have to wait is very heart wrenching....maybe that is also the case with

some of these " foolish " women.

Sorry if I offended anyone but I just can't keep the yap shut on this one!

As you can see I'm a bit behind in my email. I could not connect to your WLS

story via the link. Could you please send me the address? Thanks
