Guest guest
My son is in 7th grade. In health class the teacher gave them a quiz to see if they are " healthy " . My son came home very upset after taking this quiz because he felt the quiz showed he was unhealthy although he really was healthy. The questions were all yes or no and the quiz was " Scored " on how many yeses you had. Here's a sampling of the quiz: Do you read the nutrition labels on the foods you eat? Y or N Do you have more than 7 friends? Y or N Do you eat junk food? Y or N Do you play sports? Y or N Unfortunalely I cannot remember what other questions were on the quiz. I'm sure you can just imagine what else was on there. Do you weigh below the 50th percentile for your age? Do you exercise at least 30 minutes a day getting your heart rate up into the aerobic zone? Do you avoid all sweets and fats? Blahblahblah!! The best news is that he at least he realized that it was the quiz that was bogus, and did not take it to mean he is unhealthy. This is infuriating. What 12 year old do you know reads nutrition labels? And how does having more that 7 friends make you healthier than having less than 7 friends? What 12 year old does not eat junk food. Middle school is hard enough without the teachers giving out this Sh*t!
Guest guest
If it were me, I'd go ahead and write a note to the teacher about that, my daughter is also in 7th grade, no 7th grader reads food labels!! She eats junk food, has several friends, and doesn't (currently) do sports, but she has about 1% body fat and is growing like a weed - I'd like to see her a little more active, but she's definitely healthy!!!!!!! Plus, this is a very vulnerable time for kids, especiallly girls, how many little girls went home from school thinking they need to go on a diet???? Mikki , I am with you for being unhappy about this 'quiz'! I'm glad youlet your son know that such input is not LAW for him. The world isfull of opinion and ideas, unfortunately school seems to be a place where one is TOLD what to think and do rather than develop their ownabilities and talents. (off soap box now - phew!) Sorry to anyteachers here, but I think you also know how much of what you teach isdirected for you instead of you being allowed to work with your students for their best.Healthy?!? Says who?!? And I bet they aren't as 'healthy' as theywould like to think they are either! Good job for really teaching your son what is 'healthy' :) KatchaIEing since March 2007>> My son is in 7th grade. Guest guest
Mikki, that's exactly what I thought. This time in their lives is sensitive enough without insinuating that they are unhealthy. It's like when I was a kid and they used to weigh us in school. No wonder we end up with self esteem issues!! > > > > > > My son is in 7th grade. In health class the teacher gave them a quiz > > > to see if they are " healthy " . Guest guest
That's what I was going to say, I hope you let the teacher know how you feel. That's insane!
