I grew up in South Orange, then my parents moved to New Vernon when I was in

college. I drive through Livingston every day in the summer because I am a

supervisor at a day camp for children with special needs. It is in West

Orange at the Schecter School on Pleasant Valley Way. Small

world!!!

Hi All,

I have a strange question to ask. Does anyone out there, know what the

chances are of having another child with RSS or IUGR. We have two children,a

seven year old who seems to be following the normal height and weight charts

(50%), and Lena ( who you all know so much about now). Lena does not have a

diagnosis at this point so we do not know what the problem is. I personally

feel it is either RSS or RSS-like symptoms. Certainly, some growth problem

is there. We will know in May, I hope.

We have been thinking of baby # 3. What has kept us from having one earlier

is the prospect of having to go through all of this " stuff " again. We love

our Lena like anything, but the thought of going through the last four years

( which has been very tough on her and us) again is a little daunting, to

say the least.

As well, are there any precautions one can take to try to have a non-IUGR

child?

My first pregnancy was very normal. No problems what so ever. With the

second pregnancy, which was Lena, although there was nothing major, I did

have some minor problems.

1)When they did the AFP test ( alpha fetal protein), my tests came back

abnormal. First it was high and than low. We did the amino. and a very

extensive ultra sound and found that everything was fine. (They scared the

living daylights out of us first, though). We were told after everything was

o.k., that this test results in a high positive outcome. Apparently, it was

strange to have a result which showed both high and low results. ( I felt

the first calculation was wrong, because I knew the exact dates of

conception and knew when they drew the blood it would be wrong, because they

were basing it on the last day of my period rather than the date of

conception. I was basically off my cycle. The second test which was done

after an ultrasound, was a back calculation based on what they thought was

the actual age.)

The result of all this was that I was very stressed during the initial

months of pregnancy and never really relaxed till the end.

Is there a stress component to all this IUGR/Rss?

2) The second unusual aspect of the pregnancy was the toxemia. Which

resulted in my having to be induced a month early. They claim they caught it

early enough before there was damage.

Thanks for any info.,

Ann Rajan.

Hi Ann...

I can't shed light on your major question, but I can tell you that those AFP

tests can often give you false positive results. The timing is critical! We

were so traumatized by the up and down of our AFP testing with , that we

vowed not to ever get tested again. What was the point? Just so that we would

get percentages that we would then have to lose sleep over?

So, my two cents..I would not make decisions based on your AFP experiences.!

Ann R. -

My alpha feta tests came back abnormal also, they just changed my date,

didn't really look much further until they were about to push it back the 3rd

time, which would have been 3 months - though I was POSITIVE when she was

conceived (I had the whole ovulation chart, temperature taking thing going) -

anyway, just thought that was interesting about the alpha feta protien

test...anyone else have an abnormal one? hasn't been diagnosed yet

either (seeing Dr. H in 2 WEEKS, hoping she'll tell me SOMETHING!) - But

thought this may help - Jes' geneticist hasn't said this in exact words, but

basically doesn't have a clue what is wrong with Jes, but has said that in

general terms our chances of reoccurance are 25% - this is very general since

there is no diagnosis, but could possibly apply to Lena also - though I'm no

geneticist (even though I feel like I know more than Jes' sometimes!) - Hope

this helps a little.....

  • 7 years later...

i was on a wild goose chase too.

my pcp at the time when i lived in boston immediately knew the signs

because of some condition her family member had.

so she sent a letter to my GI and he sent me to a neurologist and i

had a whole bunch of MRI's done that came out totally normal.

i would start with a really good neurologist.

because you need an mri.

jodi

is the heat/veins as intense?
