The

Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic (ASAC),

located

in Coral Gables, Florida, provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to

children and adults to investigate the possibility of an autism spectrum

disorder (ASD). The purposes of the evaluation are to determine current level

of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC

includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in

diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists, doctoral

level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting clinicians from

CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that individuals

diagnosed with autism and their families are connected to CARD services and

supports. State-of-the-art assessment measures, such as the

ADOS

and ADI-R are used in ASAC evaluations.

County's Parent Training " Weekend with the Experts " series.

Participants will receive an overview of what federal and state

laws require for all students in Florida, so that parents will recognize when

their own student’s services are different, and know what options they

have. A review of what Scientific Research Based intervention means and what we

know about what is effective for students with disabilities will be provided.

Florida laws concerning procedural safeguards will be

addressed, as well.

CARD serves both children and adults of all levels of intellectual functioning

who have autism, pervasive developmental disorders, autistic-like disabilities,

dual sensory impairments, or sensory impairments with other disabling

conditions. Their primary focus is to provide individualized, direct assistance

to these individuals and their families. Services include family support,

technical assistance and consultation, parent and professional training

programs, and public education activities. The dedicated members of The Society

of Bar and Gavel want to help raise funds for a program that provides these

free services to those families who are affected by autism and related

disabilities.

The Council for Exceptional Children will host its Annual Conference on

October 23-25, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota.

This event will feature keynote addresses

from Prof. Deshler of the University of Kansas, Prof. Beth Harry of the

University of Miami, and Bambi Lockman, Chief of the Bureau of Exceptional

Education and Student Services in the Florida Department of Education. The

conference will also include educational sessions on a number of child and

school related topics such as school climate/discipline, family school

partnerships, diversity, teacher recruitment, technology and curriculum.

If you are a parent or a professional that deals with exceptional children on a

regular basis, this may be an ideal event for you to attend. For more
