The latest evidence – examined by the world’s leading experts

Migraine is a common, disabling disorder, affecting about 12% of Western populations. It is more prevalent in women than men, and in the age range 30 to 50 years.

Ibuprofen is an effective and well-tolerated non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which has been available as an over the counter (OTC) medication in the UK and US for 25 years. OTC medications are less expensive, more accessible and have favourable safety profiles relative to many prescription treatments.

Although ibuprofen is frequently used to treat migraine headaches, to date there has been no comprehensive systematic review of the efficacy of this intervention in treating migraine in adults. In a recent Cochrane Review, the authors identified nine relevant studies, including 4,509 patients.

So, is ibuprofen effective, either alone or in combination with an antiemetic, in the treatment of acute migraine headaches in adults? Read the latest edition of Cochrane Journal Club to find out.

If you take part in a regular journal club, or would simply like a greater understanding of an important Cochrane Review, Cochrane Journal Club is the place to start.
