Ketchup (Carol and Marilyn)

I have never tried making my own ketchup and this question may sound silly, but is bottled campbells tomato juice legal - the store did not have it in the can except for the low-sodium one which has other additives? Also do you follow the recipe for ketchup in the btvc book and how long does it usually simmer? Thanks.
