Despite Promises, Toys R Us is Still Selling 'Toxic Toys'

As consumers wise up to the dangers in the everyday items available to them, the failure for Toys 'R' Us to live up to their promises to clean up their toxic shelves has shown the toy marketing giant to be an enemy of children, not it's fun promoting partner. The EU has already banned the use of this chemical as well as some states. 72 percent of the toys tested contained high levels of chlorine, which indicates they were most likely made of PVC, to make matters worse these products were not labeled as containing the chemical.

"Two years ago, millions of toys were recalled because they were contaminated with lead. This new investigation found that Toys R Us and their suppliers have replaced one toxic hazard, lead, with another, organotins" said Jeff Gearhart, Research Director at the Ecology Center. The organotins, compounds containing at least one bond between tin and carbon, are not 100% bound to the polymer and can easily migrate from within a PVC product to the surface exposing even more harmful chemicals. While manufacturers in China pump out these toxic toys tailored to be money producing pieces of toxic plastic, Toy's 'R' Us will be pumping out commercial after commercial baiting children to beg their parents for the newest toxic toy for Christmas. Judge Orders Monsanto to Destroy GMO Sugar Beets

Finally some good news about GMO's! Monsanto has been ordered to destroy their plantings of genetically engineered sugar beets, plantings that had been given the go ahead by the USDA. In 2005 the USDA approved the genetically altered seeds in question, in August of this year U.S. District Court Judge White banned the planting and sale of the seeds stating that the government must conduct a thorough environmental review before approving the crop. In complete violation of the ruling, the USDA and Monsanto went ahead with the planting. Earthjustice, a consumer group, brought it to the judges attention.

In his conclusion, the judge wrote, "The legality of [the] defendants' conduct does not even appear to be a close question." So he ordered that the plants be torn out of the ground.

Lead counsel for the plaintiffs, Achitoff of Earthjustice, stated USDA thumbed its nose at the judicial system and the public by allowing this crop to be grown without any environmental review. Herbicide resistant crops just like this have been shown to result in more toxic chemicals in our soil and water. FDA Orders Family Farm with Perfect Record to Destroy $250,000 of Cheese

The disputed ink is barely dry on s 510 and it would seem the FDA has given itself the 'authority' to attack small farms. Although not one person has reported illnesses from Morningland Dairy's cheese in the cheese makers 30 year long perfect record, the FDA has ordered the farm to destroy $250,00 worth of cheese. Samples taken from Morningland Dairy's cheeses sold at the Rawesome store in Venice, CA tested positive for the harmful bacteria staphylococcus aureus and listeria monocytogenes. The results of these samples are questionable, the cheese tested had been in CA for 4 months before being collected and wasn't tested until 7 weeks after being confiscated. Under CA statutes, confiscated food is to be tested right away and a sample sent to the company in question so they can do their own testing, Morningland Dairy never received a sample of the allegedly contaminated cheese.

Almost 70,000 pounds of cheese were recalled and a small farm was ordered to destroy 8 months worth of stored cheese without the FDA doing any more testing or allowing it to be done by the farm itself. The small family run dairy farm has countered the attack with sensibility only to be met with bumbling, bullying demands and lack of proof of the contamination. If Morningland Dairy were to lose the income from all of their dedicated effort, the families that have worked on this farm will be destroyed and one more supplier of essential health foods will be eliminated from the already debilitated food supply. The FDA refused to allow testing to be done on the cheese that was ordered destroyed even after swabs of the entire cheese facility and barns came back clear, throughout this waiting game the cheese goes to waste and the opportunity to salvage the farms income dwindles. Unconstitutional S.510 Food Bill Driven by Big Food Lobby Dollars

The Food 'Safety' Modernization act has certainly taken those paying attention to it on a roller - coaster ride of amendments, stalls and clashes. Now it seems the ride is over and at least for now the bill is dying due to an unconstitutional section of the bill that allowed senate to raise taxes that caused it to be shut down in the House. While there is reason to feel relief for now, the threat still lingers as a new food safety bill will be introduced next year and we're facing an administration that has hired former employees of Monsanto and accepted large sums of money from corporations backing such bills. There is still a need to continue to stand against these types of actions by the government and big-ag industry so as to protect the vital foods provided by local and organic growers.

While over 200 organizations lobbied on the Food Safety Modernization Act (S.510), no one seemed to notice an unconstitutional section in the bill until after it passed on Tuesday. That day, Roll Call advised that the bill contained a provision, Sec. 107, allowing the Senate to raise revenues. This violates Article I, Section 7, of the U.S. Constitution, granting that power exclusively to the House. S.510 opponents now celebrate the House's use of the "blue slip process" to return the bill to the Senate.

It is believed that it is unlikely that the Senate will return to a debate on S.510, given its full agenda.
