Yes, CCFA,I have additional comments!

They do not relate to your lack of endorsement in the absence of

sufficient formal testing.

It is documented that Elaine Gottschall stated in writing that SCD is

neither a low carb nor a low calorie diet and you have not explained

why you choose to ignore the protocols of the accredited scientist

who researched and expanded details of this diet.

My continuing protest concerns an inaccurate description of the diet

within an article circulated as information to your newsletter

subscribers. The preparation procedure of legumes to minimize starch

action is not mentioned in response to Dr. Arthur Heller's statement.

This is unscientific and misleading because unless treated as * see

below*aforementioned legumes are difficult to digest. Anyone familiar

with the diet knows caution is advised regarding delaying

introduction of legumes until later when some healing has taken

place. Your article gives implications that SCD includes legumes in

their less digestible format and at any point.

In not addressing my two criticisms, I believe you show a bias

against the SCD.

The SCD is a dietary option that has been proven by an impressive

number of followers to have been helpful for the many who adhere to

it strictly. I have no objection the fact that the CCFA article

quotes those for whom SCD has not been effective. If SCD were a 100%

cure, it would make media headlines.

Since you have chosen not to make the requested changes, I will

continue to comment wherever required on this unresolved issue.

SCD™ is NOT a low carbohydrate diet. I do not expect you to recommend

it without formal test results but at least present it correctly!

I have been complaining about this article since its publication and

the absence of a correction or publication of my comments!

Hitchens said my issues would be presented to a board for discussion

and now she is gone.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet was developed and popularized by

biochemist Elaine Gottschall in her 1994 book, Breaking the Vicious

Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet. Gottschall, who spent time

exploring the changes that occur in the intestinal wall in IBD while

at the University of Western Ontario, wrote her book after observing

the effects of a low-carbohydrate, gluten-free diet on her eight-year-

old daughter, who had been diagnosed with colitis at age five.

Legumes are an advanced food and must be soaked 8 hours, rinsed

several times and precooked for at least 45 minutes before even being

added to recipes which require further cooking:

Arthur D. Heller, M.D., a New York City gastroenterologist who is

certified by the American Board of Nutrition, points out several

inconsistencies in the diet. " Foods are excluded, " he says, " because

of their purported inability to be digested well. But of the foods

allowed, legumes are known to contain certain carbohydrates that are

not well digested by humans.
