Guest guest
I have been doing SCD since October 2007. I thought I was celiac but the diet was not helping all the way. In my last doctor appointment I began to believe it was SIBO. The SCD diet has been helping tremendously. I found that I could not eat garlic, onions, and eggs as well as grains/starches. I very rarely have constipation problems anymore. The smelly gas is mostly gone! Halleluiah! I was taking acidophilus, the cow's milk yogurt wasn't working with me. I since tried goat's milk yogurt and it is working beautifully. I think I started having problems with yeast. I was having a lot of mucus. Peppermint oil made me burp and it hurt. I tried caprylic acid and I can't remember why I didn't like it. I take coconut oil sometimes. Then I started I just started s. boulardii. I can't remember exactly when my bad breath began, but it is driving me crazy. One time it was so bad I had to have some gum. Bad idea, I had stomach cramps and the runs. I use a mouthwash from breathRX that I used to use before and worked really well. Is the bad breath a sign of the yeast overgrowth, or is it a sign that antifungals are working? I had heard about how symptoms start to resolve themselves by reappearing in reverse order that they started. I had had really bad breath before and I also had yeast problems before. And there is no safe breath mint that I can use. What can I do???????? Kim celiac ? SIBO ? SCD since October 2007
Guest guest
When my daughter gets bad breath, she uses a Neti Pot to clean out her sinuses. Works great! Guest guest
Hi Kim I had terrible breath just before I started SCD and for the first year on SCD because I also was dealing with a major candida/yeast overgrowth. I had oral thrush and gum problems, along with throat and ear conditions -- and lots of other symptoms connected to the disturbed microorganism ecology. I found that as I dealt with the yeast overgrowth through my food choices (allergic to antifungals) and the mouth sores improved, my breath also improved. It took about a year for my breath to improve, and the odd taste in my mouth to disappear. Incidentally, I also have major dental problems during this time as well. Oh, and during that first year I also took, on my doctor's recommendation, a course of Xifaxin, a small-intestine antibiotic to help with bloating. I couldn't find a breath mint that was SCD-legal, so I just swished mouthwash around my mouth 3 or 4 times a day. I kept a small bottle of mouthwash at work. It had the advantage of improving the taste in my mouth plus helping with the gum sores... During the first month on SCD I was also swishing yogurt around my mouth a few times a day to help clear up the thrush -- swishing and spitting the yogurt out as my body reacted allergically to swallowed probiotics... I timed the mouthwash swishes with the yogurt swishes so I wouldn't undo the effectiveness of the yogurt. Generally I used yogurt swishes at home morning and night, and the mouthwash during the day at work. Eventually, as my yeast levels decreased, my breath improved. I'd say it took about a year, though, because I couldn't handle any antifungals, so just had to pick SCD foods that helped me eliminate the yeast. No one ever complained about my bad breath, but I noticed it myself and didn't like it. Kim M.
