Have any of you purged your home of SCD illegals after being on the diet for some time?

If you did, how far into it did you make that decision?

I’m dreading the thought of giving stuff away that I’d stocked up on but can’t have on this diet.

Hi Deb,

I have done a " semi-purge " as my husband still eats " normally. "

Since starting SCD last July, I've gotten rid of most prepared

canned goods, pasta, and bottles of marinade, salad dressings, and

all the tons of condiments we used to keep in the refrigerator.

Most of my motivation came from the need for more room to store SCD-

made food and ingredients in my cupboards and fridge. So far, it

hasn't really been a problem except recently when my husband just

HAD to HAVE some canned chicken soup. I didn't have any of my own

made or frozen, so he had to go to the store and buy some (poor

baby). <light sarcasm> I think he was sick and cranky - and

unfortunately I didn't have much sympathy (i.e., " Well at least you

can just run to the store and buy some, I would have to cook up the

chicken and veggies, and let it stew for 4 hours if I wanted chicken

soup ... " )

I was actually glad to donate so much food because it was right

before the holidays when there were a lot of food drives going on -

but I'm sure there are plenty of people who would totally appreciate

any food you can't use.

I certainly don't miss any of it. (Of course, I miss the convenience

but I'm so happy to feel better so consistently that I truly don't

think about it too much anymore, except in situations like the one I

just mentioned, which are really few and far between.) :)

Deb,

I got rid of the worst offenders -- donated BAGS of whole wheat pasta and

whole wheat flour and... and... and... to family, friends, and the local

food bank almost at once after making the decision to go SCD. All the

canned stuff went to the local food bank, too.

The rest took awhile.... I sure had a hard time giving up some of my

convenience food. And I made a BUNCH of mistakes in the beginning,

too.

I gave it to friends and relatives. The hardest thing

to find a home for were things I was eating on

gluten free, before SCD.

Think of it as a way to make more room for your

new SCD ingredients.

This is a very difficult choice to make, especially when there are other family members. Our 15 year old daughter has Crohn's. When we committed to SCD, we did a major purge. There are still things around for the other 2 children (14 and 8) to eat. But we wanted to show our support for Cecilia. I gave food away, but threw away stuff that had been opened like the soy sauce, mayo, steak sauce, corn meal etc. Just great rid of the temptation.LaRae Mom of Cecilia - UC 6/06 Crohn's 8/07SCD 2/16/08 SCD illegals purge
