Guest guest
Hi, My name is Susie and I live in Southern Indiana. I have all kinds of health issues and was thinking that I might have celiac disease until I did some further searching. Right now I am having terrible bloating. Normally I have been able to get rid of the bloating, but I have had it for over two weeks now despite not eating any gluten, so I ordered the BTVC book. I have a dx of IBS, but I also have a spondyloarthritis. I haven't started the diet yet because I don't have the book, but I was already off grains, so I just quit eating sugar and my coffee(sob). I feel some better but I have some sinus congestion like I have a cold and also joint pain and I was wondering if this was a symptom of detoxing. Has anybody really gotten a cold from eliminating sugars and starches? It's possible that I do just have a cold but I feel so much lighter (except for bloating everytime I eat something) that detox symptoms seem logical. Or it could be that the cold is just minimal because I'm getting healthier. So I was wondering if anyone else had these symptoms when beginning the diet? Also, does anyone know if Elaine followed her own diet, or if she just had her daughter on it. I was surprised to read that she died at 83. Thanks, Susie
Guest guest
Susie Welcome to the group. The symptoms you describe are common with die-off and detoxing. They're also common to an immune system response. Of course getting a cold or flu is another matter, and I haven't heard anyone blaming SCD for this as yet!! Usually time will let you know which it is. Die-off and detoxing symptoms tend to last only a day or two, sometimes up to a week. Immune responses last as long as you keep eating the food or taking the supplement, so you won't know for sure unless you start testing. I experienced severe joint pain for a while that didn't disappear after a few days, so I began testing and learned it was a sensitivity to the 1/3 c. of yogurt I was eating nearly every day. So, stopped that and the joint pain improved. Well, until 4 months ago when I developed problems with my left leg, but that's another story.... I'm afraid the first few months on SCD are filled with lots of testing and experimenting, and worries because detoxing and die-off does trigger some unusual symptoms. Just keep going, stick to easy-to-digest foods, and be ready to test the foods and supplements you're taking until you work out your core group. Each of us end up with a slightly different list of foods and supplements in our core groups. The good thing is that the longer you're on SCD the easier it becomes -- and the better you feel. It's worth the worries and struggles and frustrations of the first few months. Keep asking questions. There's a lot of information to absorb at first, and it isn't easy making a lifestyle change. It's worth it, though. Kim M. SCD 4+ years >>>>>>>>>>>> I have a cold and also joint pain and I was wondering if this was asymptom of detoxing.
