Hey guys!

So in response to this topic, I have started walking to school. Let me

tell you, it is a far walk, but I can't believe all of the things I

never noticed while on the way there. There is a lovely fountain that

I never saw when I drove by and now, I get to walk by Lake Merced in

San Francisco instead of just zoom past it. The walk to school is

about 45 minutes one way, but during that time I think things through

and sort them out. Kind of like me time. Aside from that, it has a

tri-purpose: It is a work out, it gets me where I need to go, I get my

own time and I save gas, parking fees and fighting for parking with

people as well. What a great way to incorporate movement!

As soon as I find my mind drifting to calories burned, the amount of time, the incline, etc. on the treadmill I recognize it and immiediatly shift my thoughts to "how do I FEEL right now?" I make it a point to mindfully observe my body...focus on the steps I am taking, my breathing etc. When I get off the treadmill I also focus on how I am feeling because I usually feel great...a little more stress free and ready to take on the world!!!:) I will walk for about 20-30 minutes depending on how I feel. It's nice to give myself permission do workout in the "grey area." I felt the same way about excercise having to be a full workout. I was very aware of the time, distance, etc...and I HAD TO go for 35 minutes or more, then after I would workout with weights. My routine was so rigid that it always

became stale and fizzled out....

Re: Principle 9 - Exercise--Feel the Difference

I've just recently started to take up this principle as well (after 8 months.) I was a very active child. It's only when exercise became compulsory that I started to hate it. It became all about weight loss, burning x amount of calories, etc. It has been VERY hard (harder than the eating part of IE for me) to quit thinking like this. I've only recently started to accept that exercise does not have to be a full workout in order to be worth it. I still have to remind myself of this contstantly. I've been getting on the treadmill a little lately (15 min) and each time I step on, my mind automatically thinks, time~calories~ heart rate~weight loss, etc. I have to make a concious decision to STOP thinking and just do a little something. I am slowly working into the gray area.:)MegIE since Feb '08 > > Near the beginning of this chapter on exercise the authors talk about > it being okay to put this off for a little while and I have taken > advantage of that.
