Guest guest
Mission There are not training and development sports programs for our kids right now. There are some programs that give a sports-like experience, but nothing in my 5 years of experience to teach them fundamentals or teach alot of the lessons that sports should try to teach (earning a result, facing challenges, working with others). Baseball is hard enough in this area for kids who are just athletically deficient, and although mainstreaming if possible is a definite goal, and I don't want to throw someone in the deep end of the pool and be chased away. We want to keep things flexible right now so we can make changes based on feedback, and we don't want to just set up things based on just our viewpoints. This will require some patience and communication on all of our parts. Field Space We are still working with teams in Weston and environs on committed field space. We know we have Friday spot at Vista Park (near and Bonaventure Rds in Weston, behind Cypress Bay High School), and some great coaches and kids to teach the kids some ball. We are still processing paperwork with other municipalities and will add space as our needs demand. Games and Practices Fall is traditionally a time of training and development for any baseball program. We are more interested right now in just getting the kids on the field and getting basic skills like throwing and batting started and we can get a formal scrimmage/practice schedule based on what we see out there and what would be most fun for the kids. I want us to have goals that match the kid's development, and if that means we have to push off a game schedule I think that is fine. Teams I'd like to see the kids, get a sense of who lives where, what the final field dispensation looks like before splitting kids up. Also there is some benefit in having a manageable group train and scrimmage together. Uniforms and Equipment Baseball hats, preferably cleats, preferably baseball pants, and a t- shirt to start. I think every american should have a baseball glove, bat and helmet, but if you are just trying this out, or don't know what to get, by all means we have some equipment. Uniforms I want to stay flexible on to get your feedback on what you want. There are resources for the team to fund it, sponsors that would be happy to provide something, and families who might decide they want to take it on. Money There are no registration fees, and things can be done with no parent outlay. There are plenty of resources for funding, and while not limitless, it can provide what we need. We want to be respectful of those who have and will give, and want them to continue to help us, so we will probably err on the side of frugality initially. Our experience has been that sometimes people sign up and for whatever reason do not continue. This incurs a fair amount of expense and waste that we would like to avoid. League Babe Ruth League has been in existence since 1951 and has about 1 million participants. All players will be covered by league insurance, and we have coaches who have been around the block in various leagues. The kid volunteers are some very good and accomplished baseball players. Weston Youth Baseball Club, Inc. owns the league as a non-profit entity, and we are in the process of getting our own 501c3 designation instead of using another organizations currently which has been workable, but not ideal.
