URGENT!! See forwarded

message from Jim Notter --

We need to get as great a parent turnout for this event as

possible – this proposed funding tragedy will certainly greatly impact

ESE.

¨The proposed Constitutional Amendment 5,

for instance, requires the legislature, starting with the 2011 tax bill to

eliminate the property taxes that fund public schools. The economic

projection, should this amendment pass, would result in a $9.3 billion cut in

public school funding within three years!

¨The proposed Constitutional Amendment 7

would allow the legislature to enact a voucher program that will deplete much

needed funds from public schools. Public schools would then be competing with

private schools for much needed funding, resulting in a loss of funds and

students and, thus, leading to additional cuts in programs and services.

¨And the proposed Constitutional Amendment

9 would, amongst other impacts, require at least 65 percent of school funding

received by school districts be spent on classroom instruction with no clear

definition of what “In the

classroom” expenses are. The language was last defined 25 years ago

and there have been significant changes in instruction costs since 1980, especially

relating to ESE.

These are vital issues. Please get the word

out that we need a STRONG parental showing tomorrow!

I apologize for the last minute notice, but I received word of this

only this morning when I read an email sent to my office Friday afternoon after

I had left the office for the day.

From Jim Notter:

Senator Haridopolos will be in Broward County

to rally support in opposition to Amendment 5. See below information:

Senator Mike Haridopolos has organized a series

of debates relating to Amendment 5 which will appear on the November 4, 2008,

general election ballot. We would like to ensure that there is a good

public turnout (especially PTA) for these debates, particularly the first one

in Broward. The PTA issue briefs on Amendments 5,7 and 9 can be found at

the following link: www.floridapta.org/Legislation.html

The first debate is next Tuesday, July 22, 2008

at 1:30 pm at the Sams Hall Performing

Cultural Arts

Building (Bldg. 68) on the Broward Community College Campus, 7200 Pines Blvd., Pembroke

Pines, Florida.

I have attached a full schedule of the debates which will be held.

We are requesting your action to get 5-10 people from your

organization to meet at McArthur High School, 6501 Hollywood Boulevard,

Hollywood (map attached), in front of the auditorium, at 12:45 PM on Tuesday,

7/22, to organize and go to Broward Community College South in support of

Senator Haridopolos. Our goal is to have 50+ parents and/or community

members at this meeting. Merrie Meyers-Kershaw will arrange for a

conference call Monday morning to get an approximate head count for you and to

provide you with additional information about this meeting.

Thank you.
