Thank you for this list. I will add it to my ownLOL..I didn't see Pica in the list, but my daughter has this too. Besides what you listed I also want to add to it...the non- medical aspects.

1. Parents who have truly learned the meaning to unconditional love

2. Sweet smiles

3. Caring hearts

4. giggles(sometimes too many./lol)

5. The ability to teach the world we all need to make great changes to our enviornment

6. How the world views all types of disabilities

7. They are changing the way the world views disabilities.

8. Making insurance companies hear our cries for help

9. Changing the way doctors listen, and making earlier diagnosis

10. Most of all.... never forgetting hearing a first word, word once lost, hug you thought you might never get, or seeing your child old his/her siblings hand.

Despite all the bad..there is always good too. We should never let the good outway the bad.

Thank you for your list, I sure have a lot to add to it too; but at the end of even my worse of days I will somehow forget what doctors will refuse to call a disease and instead just call it a day.

All my thought of hope for a better future,

Kriss

Ok if you ask this question to people on here you will get an arrange of

answers. To answer your question as I can best describe it. Autism is a psyche

disorder from the DSM-IV. YES! A psychiatric disease. Like a mental health

disorder. That's why only a Neurologist or psychiatrist can give a diagnosis.

However only a hand full I feel can truly diagnosis the disease correctly.

That's my parent point of view.

However

EACH AUTISTIC CHILD IS NOT THE SAME. Even kids with the same level of autism are

not the same. Its you the parent which make the neurotypical child into a

functional adult, working and giving to society. It will be you who does it as

well for the autistic one. You can make a disability limit his/her life. Or you

can make it never be a part of the real person. The person who he/she will

become.

Cat aka enzo's mom

- Re: Is autism a disease?

Autism is an autoimmune disorder whether psychologists want to believe

that....and the US Supreme court rule in 1991 that Autism is no longer a mental

health disorder but a biological disorder.

If you e-mail me I can send you the US Supreme Court Ruling. Send it to your insurance company and they HAVE to pay for treatment with an autism diagnosis because it's law. I've never had a problem because of this with an autism diagnosis.

I can try to attach it here, but my documents are not coming thru...if they don't e-mail me.Plan your next getaway with AOL Travel. Check out Today's Hot 5 Travel Deals!

Forgive me, but a neurologist is not a psychiatric or psychological doctor. They are a medical doctor. Autism is not a psychiatric disorder, it is a neurobiological disorder or disease. One of the problems with insurance companies paying for treatment is that it has fallen into the mental nervous coverage rather than medical coverage. The fact is, 30 - 40 years ago they misdiagnosed autism as childhood schizophrenia and this is why it is under the psychology umbrella instead of the medical umbrella.

The current position of the medical community is that autism is a medically based disorder or disease. Plan your next getaway with AOL Travel. Check out Today's Hot 5 Travel Deals!

I have no idea what you are talking about. I did not write that list, but I titally agree with you.

I did not write that list, and I am a newbie . I think you mst have me confused with someone else. I was the one who said that I belive there was pica missing, and that we should all remember there is more to our children than the word disease. I am new to this group and to the autism world too.

Thank you for your concern

I'm not upset. I just think we create craziness when u answer a question which can bring on more questions. There are a lot of newbies on here and parents learn from here say. Especially us, parents with Autistic children. We are the founders of a new evolution of parents which are in great numbers. Setting the foundations for others like us. If I was new on here and saw that long list defining AUTISM. I would give up before it ever starts. Just try to be more compassionate to others on this group. There are so many different type of parents on here. Plus professionals. Anyone can really join this group. You know. I rather hear positive things about AUTISM any day that's all.Cat aka enzo's mom

In re: "not sure I get this...autism is a medical diagnosis in the DSM IV."

Actually, DSM stands for Diagnostic and Statisticial Manual of MENTAL Disorders.

In re: "the US Supreme court rule in 1991 that Autism is no longer a mental health disorder but a biological disorder."

I was NOT aware of that! Why then the health insurance bias?

And In re: "but at the end of even my worse of days I will somehow forget what doctors will refuse to call a disease and instead just call it a day."

Ok. Autism is a day.

And pica is officially #94.

NOW WAIT, Lyme disease and/or its co-infections is #94 and THEN Pica is #95.

Holy Cow Balls Batman!

That list should be interpreted to read as follows:

Look at all the PHYSICAL BIOLOGICAL MEDICAL traits that are associated with autism.

However when you go see a MEDICAL PHYSICIAN they tell you GO GET THERAPY.

Maybe the subject should have instead said "Isn't it ironic????"

Actually, DSM stands for Diagnostic and Statisticial Manual of MENTAL Disorders.

For everyone's information that " list " was obtained from Kathy

Blanco, writer for " Age of Autism " --a " daily web newspaper of the

autism epidemic " , an autism site which is linked often in this group

and other autism yahoo groups and also " Google " news for autism.

The article " Is Autism a Disease? " appeared on March 22, 2008.

I'm sorry that I unintentionally did not include the authors name

when I copied and shared the " list " part from that aritcle with

s' List.

My point in posting that list I thought was obvious. The point was

to say--Look at all the medical symptoms that are very commonly

associated with autism, way far more than the general population.

Yet, the only medical treatment that can be obtained for our kids,

FOR THE MOST PART, is obtained from sources considered to

be " alternative " .

That list was not meant to be negative. It was not meant to say to

the newbies, " give up, there's no hope " or " give up before you even

start " . The list was not sent with a closed mind. That list was

not meant to say that our kids are NOT amazing. The list was not an

attempt to be uncompassionate. The list does not, nor was it meant

to infer that anyone should let autism govern their lives, nor does

it infer that autism should define any person with it, nor does it

infer that your life is over because you have a child that needs

more attention.

The list was an informational list of medical symptoms associated

with autism.

PHEW! and SHEESH!

My child turned 3 two weeks ago. Am I a newbie? To tell you the

truth, if I had been sent MY e-mail on Day #1 here, I would have

been grateful for it. Considering the supports and services that

are needed for our kids, and considering the exponential increasing

rate of autism' appearance, the world may be in deep doo doo if

something is not done and soon. We need a medical community that

does NOT turn its back and that will wake up and smell the autism.

Considering the stoning my E-mail got for submitting a medical

symptoms list, this e-mail is being sent geared with a full suit of

armor for this time actually stating an opinion!

Oh and I share the same exact opinions about our amazing kids, and

the blessings, and the love, and all that was said about autism not

being defining, or limiting, or life-not-overish. I share all those

opinions. I'm just scratching my head over why these opinions were

offered as some kind of defense to a....list.!??!?!!?

When I describe my son to others, I usually start with his great sense of humor, intelligence, and infectious smile. is so much MORE than autism and all the ways it manifests through him.

Just for everyone's information, is a mom of two children with autism (not twins) and she's dealing with many serious biological issues including Lyme.

It would be naive of any parent dealing with autism to think that their child is just born that way. Yes, no one is saying you shouldn't love your child as he or she is, and appreciate their special gifts, but there are fundamental aberrations in their biochemistry, serious issues affecting their immune system and a whole cascade of irregular abnormalities going on with your child causing your child to have symptoms which are classified by neurologists and psychologists as autism. Effectively anyone can acquire these symptoms if given a particular genetic predisposition and a favorable circumstances such as environmental toxins, vaccines, trauma, tragedy/stress or whatever. It has happened. This is a spectrum disorder which means their could be variables affecting any child on the spectrum from unlimited, multiple sources to collective insults mixed in with such a variation of genetics. This is why no one protocol fits all. THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S BIOLOGICAL CONDITION THE MORE YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD REACH HIS OR HER POTENTIAL. It is a puzzle and you need to work on all fronts - biological, educational, spiritual, emotional and psychological. Recognizing all of this does not mean you have a negative understanding of autism. Reality is what it is. That list of possible medical conditions is all probable for anyone with an autoimmune disorder such as autism. All you have to do today is google autism and biological research and there is an phenomenal amount of research on going and continuing. 15 years there were no computers...no information on autism in my time. There is no excuse today to ignore what is available in the United States for autism. We are light years ahead of every other country on the planet in research. There are parents flocking to the US spending thousands of dollars to bring their children for HBOT treatment, DAN physicians and whatever they can't get biologically here to help their children. You don't have to cross an ocean - just pick up a phone and inquire.

On another note it is important to realize that puberty is a volatile time for any teenager, so you can imagine how it might possibly be for a child with autism....untreated children with autism usually end up in institutions for many reasons...primarily uncontrollable behaviors. Don't wait until then to decide to do something about your child's biological aberrations - it's much too late. Your cute little child having melt downs at 3 is not so cute at 15 self mutilating, choking others, hitting, biting and whatever.

Of course I am not eliminating all the behavioral and therapeutic interventions for autism. They are a very important and a necessary integral part of this whole healing process. However, it stands to reason that a child with more biological issues will not do as well in these therapies as a child who is being treated for all the biological issues. For example....non compliance issues are generally high yeast, Candida, fungus etc.

When the high levels are reduced, behaviors improve. Working with a child that has far less non compliance issues is much easier and you get much further ahead than a child with compliance issues. Every behavior has a biological source. It's no quick fix, but I don't think a child with autism wishes to act the way that they do...you can see they have no control over their bodies otherwise you would have control over them.

If you can't afford a DAN physician or you choose not to...contact me and I can give you some alternatives. No child should be left untreated.

Hey Diane..glad you wrote again. I saw your list exactly how you meant it to show and never doubted that you "share the same exact opinions about our amazing kids, and the blessings, and the love, and all that was said about autism not being defining, or limiting, or life-not-overish" Not sure why sometimes people feel it's one or the other.

I agree with this new post 120%.

Keep up the fight for your little one.

The list does not, nor was it meant to infer that anyone should let autism govern their lives, nor does it infer that autism should define any person with it, nor does it infer that your life is over because you have a child that needs more attention. The list was an informational list of medical symptoms associated with autism.PHEW! and SHEESH!My child turned 3 two weeks ago. Am I a newbie? To tell you the truth, if I had been sent MY e-mail on Day #1 here, I would have been grateful for it. Considering the supports and services that are needed for our kids, and considering the exponential increasing rate of autism' appearance, the world may be in deep doo doo if

something is not done and soon. We need a medical community that does NOT turn its back and that will wake up and smell the autism.Considering the stoning my E-mail got for submitting a medical symptoms list, this e-mail is being sent geared with a full suit of armor for this time actually stating an opinion!Oh and I share the same exact opinions about our amazing kids, and the blessings, and the love, and all that was said about autism not being defining, or limiting, or life-not-overish. I share all those opinions. I'm just scratching my head over why these opinions were offered as some kind of defense to a....list.!? ?!?!!? >> Thanks, I am glad you know it was not

me..have a great weekend. Did you see Oprah and the little boy on utube that only lived 99 days? Now..that is something to keep in mind when we feel overwhelmed. Give your gives extra hugs today. I wish someone had posted that message when my son was first diagnosed. I learned the hard way just how sick he as. It's not about being negative-it's about getting educated. The point was that most doctors do not treat these symptoms and it is sad because they are highly prevalent in children with autism. Instead, they only tell parents to get therapy for their children when these kids can be in pain and suffering needlessly because of Doc's ignorance. Maybe not all people with autism suffer with some of these symptoms, but a highly disproportianate number do and they are often ignored. Autism is a disease. Fran
