Hi all,

Just a heads up: the DisAbilities Expo, will be Saturday, October 11th at NSU. There is no charge for this amazing event. At the Expo, three unique symposiums will discuss Special Needs Bullying, Transition from School to Life, and Special Needs planning, wills, trusts, and guardianships. Exhibitors, great prizes, entertainment, sports, music, art activities, and a local political candidates forum will also be occurring. See below for details. SEMINARS (Library - Rm 2053)

10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

“Special Needs Bullying”

According to the US Justice Department, one of four children is bullied every day. This can be especially challenging for children with disabilities and their families. Parents may not know how to help the child or young adult cope. Author and lead expert Meline Kevorkian, Ed. D. will discuss these and other issues as she explores the topic of bullying prevention.

1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

“Transition from School to Life”

Lead community experts will discuss and answer questions on the topic of employment and school options and also explore the potential obstacles individuals with physical or developmental disabilities might face once high school is completed.

2:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“Planning for the Future…Trusts, Wills,

Guardianships, and Financial Planning”

The difficult questions relating to disability rights, Special Needs Financial Planning, Guardianships, and Wills and Trusts will be addressed. Florida SNAP, Prosperity Life Planning and Eppy Financial Group have come together for the first time, along with a parent, to share their knowledge.

AUTHOR PRESENTATIONS

(Library – Rm 3018)

11:00 a.m. Behind Our Eyes: Learn about a group of writers with disabilities founded by Sanford Rosenthal, the book they published and how to get involved.

3:00 p.m. An Ocean to Cross: Hear from author Liz Fordred how she and her husband, both paraplegics, navigated from Africa to Florida on their self-built sailboat.

PASSPORT TO PRIZES

Visit the booths to receive a small gift and

enter a drawing for a grand prize.

ART EXHIBITION

(University Center – North Atrium)

“Art Knows NO Disabilities”

October 9 – October 21

Featuring works by local artists with disabilities. Participants

include: 9Muses, Ann Storck Center, Schott Communities, UCP,

Lighthouse of Broward, and CIL in connection with Broward Public

Schools.
