Guest guest
Eileen You might be eating plenty of potassium, but your body isn't absorbing enough. So if the extra magnesium doesn't help, you might try a low dose of potassium once in a while. You might also need to occasionally boost your electrolytes, including salt. Since we don't eat processed foods on SCD we avoid all that extra salt. Which means we need to add salt to our foods regularly once we are on SCD. I add both magnesium and potassium to my electrolyte drink. My body needs frequent boosts of electrolytes, even though I'm eating a healthy and balanced diet. Unfortunately my body isn't absorbing enough, or my cells aren't able to utilize what is available. Either way, to avoid severe muscle and tendon cramps (usually in my lower legs and feet, but sometimes arms and sometimes everywhere) I have to regularly boost my electrolytes plus add more magnesium and potassium. I might have a more extreme case than you do, but it's also true that when we have digestive disorders it's common to find that we also have chronic malabsorption issues. If you're taking a calcium supplement then you will also need to boost your magnesium too. The body depletes it's magnesium stores in order to process the calcium. Most calcium supplements also contain magnesium, but sometimes our bodies still can't cope. That's one of the reasons I don't take a calcium supplement; my body can't deal with it. Besides giving me severe and debilitating lower back pain, I get severe systemic muscle cramps -- almost go into seizures. So if you're taking calcium regularly, then you might need to cut back a bit, plus boost your magnesium and potassium. Kim M. Guest guest
Eileen Did you get the muscle cramps the same night as you added the calcium/mag. pill? One thing you can try is to wait a few days before taking the calcium supplement again. See if you get any muscle cramps. If you do, then you can try boosting your magnesium and potassium a bit, see if that helps. Wait a few days longer before taking the calcium supplement again. If you get muscle cramps within 24 hours then you'll know the calcium supplement is also disrupting your body's electrolyte balance and you need to add extra magnesium at the same time as you take the calcium supplement. Or try another brand of calcium/magnesium supplement. Might need to take the calcium supplement less often plus boosting your magnesium/potassium/salt at the same time. Lots of trial and error to figure these things out. Fortunately there's lots of different supplements to try. I just don't take calcium. Since my body reacts so strongly to it the calcium does more harm than good. I worry about bone loss too, but my options are limited. Kim M. >>>>>>>>>>> yikes - I just added 1 calc /mag pill last night before bed - legs still aching on stairs today that may be prior period stuff though i know my villi were healed when they looked and as sick as I was all my levels were still ok but I never thought about salt -I've never added since I was little and never ate stuff with it in it and was always ok - but i may try the extra pot/mag and salt and see if I get results - should I keep the calc/mag pill if i have no bad affects? i am worried about osteoporosis in the future as I am small and have celiac/crohnseileen scd 2 1/2 months
