I just wanted to give you guys a gentle reminder about buying a used

breastpump to collect your milk that you plan on giving to your baby.

Home sterilizing isn't effective on most pumps, since the heat needed to

kill bacteria and viruses can't be reached safely and for a long enough

period without melting the pump pieces. Each mother produces antibodies

for diseases and germs that are within *her* environment to protect *her*

baby. You may never have any idea what sorts of organisms are living on

the pump that will touch your breasts, and the milk that you give to your

babies. It is a risk!

Many pumps can't even be autoclaved safely -- a hospital sterilization

process. The tubing, for example, is difficult to sterilize since the air

inside the tubes won't reach the temperatures necessary to kill germs.

Even the Pump In Style is considered a single-mother pump. There are parts

within the pump that milk can touch, and the motor isnt sealed to prevent

milk contamination. It isn't so much that you could get sick from a used

pump, but that your milk could be contaminated and put your baby at risk!

Another thing to remember is that most pumps have a life-span. The Medela

Mini-Electric is said to last for only about 150 hours of use! The other

electric diaphragm pumps are the same way, however, I don't know how many

hours they are expected to function.

Manual pumps also have a life span... and after so much use, their internal

parts can get dry, crack, and be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Please don't buy a used pump! If you need help paying for the pump, talk

with the pump rental station/owner. I know there are grants, and several

organizations that will pay for a pump, even WIC! You might even be able

to work out payments.

You will be saving HUNDREDS of dollars that you would otherwise be spending

for formula if you werent pumping. Just buy a new pump outright. It isn't

worth the risks of disease or breast tissue damage from an infected or

defective breastpump!!

I was just reading the literature on my pump in style by medela and it says

DO NOT buy a used pump - if you don't want to buy one, rent one from a

reliable service (like a hospital) I am using my pump in style for the

second time - I hope that is ok - I am about to order some new parts for it

though since I use it every day and I boil it constantly! LOL!

,

Good point. I didn't think about the other parts of the pump. I just assumed

that the parts that come off are the only ones that can get contaminated.

Thanks for pointing this out. I went to the auction houses last night and the

Avent Isis was selling for about $30 which is only $10 under a new one. I

didn't bid because I figured having a new one for $10 more would be better, now

I am glad I trusted my instincts. You always think of the little details,

thanks again.

There is nothing wrong with a used pump as long as you sterilize it. The

pump makers of course want us all to buy a NEW one. Yours is in the mail.

I sent it today. Mom was broke :(

shipping...I didn't even think to add extra. I have been such a goon

lately :( has thrush again too, & it's making me crazy. I have

been tryng to stockpile some mik to give to the sitter, & now I have to

use it right away. I go to work May 17th, how am I gonna get any milk

stashed to feed him if he keeps getting this damn shit?? Sorry for the

french! Any ideas?? I see nothing but a purple mess in our future. Is it

possible to have thrush in my ducts if I have no symptoms?? Obviously

the nystatin isn't doing the job. I had to fight with them to give me

Stevie,

The colloidal silver might be something that could work for you. You can take

it internally and apply it externally on you and . He can drink some in a

bottle. Zaid loves it. I know it can be really expensive in stores. The best

way is with a generator. I just hope that whatever you use works great and you

can start stockpiling right away.

I thought colloidal silver had antibiotic properties? If so how would that

help thrush since that causes the yeast to get out of control to start with.

Can you see about getting a prescription for Nizoral? I took that for 15

days and it worked. The may also have alt for . Shipping was $9.00.

If pumps were truly profitable, Evenflo and Gerber wouldn't sell theirs

under $20.

It's not that the pump makers want you to buy new ones, its an honest risk

of cross-contamination. Especially if you buy a used pump from someone you

don't know. If it is a family member, or a close friend, you have an

inkling about their personal health, and would probably know if they had a

communicable disease.

Even La Leche League, who doesnt make a profit from the sale of pumps,

recommends not sharing pumps because of cross-contamination. The motor

inside the Pump In Style isnt sealed, like a rental pump motor, and cannot

be sterilized. There is a potential for cross-contamination with them.

Oh Stevie, do I hate to tell you this! You can re-infect a baby with thrush

if you give him milk that has yeast in it from a prior infection.

Antibiotics are a good cause for yeast to grow in your body while you are

taking them, but you *dont* need antibiotics to treat yeast; it will make

it worse!

Let me check with a friend about heating milk before you use it to see if

that is one way to kill thrush that it in stored breast milk. That way you

wont have to give up on the milk supply you have stored so far!

Also, talk to your doctor about Diflucan. At this point, you need more

than a single dose treatment. Most lactation consultants (and it might

help if you had one for this prescription) recommend a *loading dose* of

400 mgs followed by 200 mgs for several days.

But then again, if you dont have any symptoms, and isnt uncomfortabl

from the yeast infection, you might try using Gentian Violet plus an

elimination diet for a while --cut out all sugar and yeast products (bread)

-- while you use the GV.

Yeast can become resistant to Nystatin, and it sounds like yours is.

Thanks for the information. I only wished I had known this before I loaned

my breast pump out. It is a Pump In Style, and I only loaned the pump and

not the tubing or anything else. What do you recommend now? I may never

need it again, but hopefully I will! Now, even though I still breastfeed, I

have no need for pumping, but I do hope to have one more child and had

planned on using this pump again.

Thanks in advance.
