Autism Society of America Announces Barbara Newhouse as Chief

Operating Officer

The Autism Society of America is pleased to announce the appointment

of Barbara Newhouse as Chief Operating Officer (COO) beginning October 1. An

Iowa native, Ms. Newhouse brings with her 30 years of successful experience in

the non-profit arena with organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association and

American Cancer Society. With demonstrated experience in change management,

public relations, fundraising, board governance and network/chapter leadership,

Ms. Newhouse will lead the largest grassroots organization dedicated to autism

Ride for Autism in Dallas This Weekend

After six strong years in ville, Fla., nationally syndicated radio

personalities Lex Staley and Terry Jaymes are bringing Ticket to Ride to their

hometown to benefit the Autism Society of America. Hundreds of motorcyclists

from around the region will converge on Dallas in a 20-car, police-escorted

motorcycle rally to make a difference in the lives of people with autism and

Sensory Friendly Films Expand to New Markets this October

Don't miss the next ASA/AMC Sensory Friendly Film on October 11! We have added

nearly 30 new theatres this month for a showing of " Beverly Hills Chihuahua. " In

order to accommodate the unique needs of the autism community, as well as those

with other disabilities, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought

up, the sound turned down, and AMC's " Silence is GoldenĀ® " policy will not be

ADVOCACY

Congress Passes Bill Restoring ADA Rights

Last week, Congress passed a bill restoring many of the rights guaranteed by the

Americans with Disabilities Act. Despite passage of the ADA in 1990, many

individuals with disabilities still face discrimination in the workplace. Court

decisions over the last decade have excluded individuals who should have been

covered under the current ADA law. These narrow court interpretations have

restricted ADA coverage for people with diabetes, epilepsy, serious heart

conditions, mental disabilities and cancer. Read more:

Anne Arundel County Public Schools, land, recently announced the newly

copyrighted release of " Building Bridges--A Multidisciplinary Team Approach to

Supporting Students with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism in the Classroom. " This

guide was developed by the school system in partnership with several community

organizations, including the Anne Arundel County Chapter of the Autism Society

of America. It provides a variety of materials to support the inclusion of

CPI Announces Autism Awareness Seminar

The Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc., (CPI) has recently launched an awareness

seminar aimed at helping professionals recognize, relate and respond to

individuals with autism in the workplace. " Autism Matters at Work " explores how

awareness of autism's unique characteristics can help promote respectful

interactions, reduce tension, maximize safety and prevent crisis situations in

Hudson Valley Regional Center for Autism Launches at Westchester

Institute of Human Development

The Hudson Valley Regional Center for Autism has recently opened at the

Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) in Valhalla, N.Y. The new

center, which has just received a special designation as one of the six newly

established Regional Autism Centers in New York State, is a collaboration of
