Hi,

I'm confused about the advice re potatoes, yams, chick peas, etc. From

Elaine's book (p.72), it seems that those are all ok to try after

considerable improvement has been made. Am I reading this correctly?

Or is it just turnips that can be tried? Experienced SCDers, please

advise. Thanks!

Thanks! No, those are **not** okay to try while on the diet, they are illegals.Though after you've healed completely, after being on the diet a few years, one might be able to reintroduce them if so minded. I have a different edition than you, so don't see what passage youare referring to about the turnips. Though I believe turnips wereoriginally legal, and then after hearing back from the various lists, she realized that enough people were having trouble with themthat they became illegal.Yes, here it is on the list:IllegalIn the most recent printing of BTVC (Ninth Printing - May 2002), turnips were moved from the 'allowed' list to the 'not allowed' list.Mara

Yes, I have the 12th edition as well (Jan. 2007) and it is extremely

confusing! Where was the copy editor? Glad to know I'm not the

only one who is puzzled. Ah well, here's to individualized

experimentation. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the input.

I just looked at my copy of BTVC (I have the 10th edition from 2004)

and see why people might be confused. The confusion stems from the

way it's written.

Mine says under the heading " NOT PERMITTED " :

" Potatoes (white or sweet), yams, parsnips, okra, chick peas, bean

sprouts, soybeans, mungbeans, fava beans, garbanzo beans, turnips

(may be tried after considerable improvement). "

So - the parenthetical phrase " (may be tried after considerable

improvement) " applies only to turnips - not all the foods in the

list.

It is really quite absolute that potatoes are illegal (except as

Mara said, if you've been completely symptom-free ( " healed " ) and are

so inclined to start adding in illegals to see if you stay symptom-

free).
