Guest guest
My son who is 8 now took Focalin XR from age 5 to 7. We started with 5MG Focalin XR but within 3 months had to increase it to 10MG. For 2 years, Focalin did a good enough job in helping him focus and reducing impulsive and hyperactive behaviors. But overtime it became less and less efficient and less lasting and we had to switch him to a new medication. Side effects we observed with Focalin were mood swings (crying for no reason) at the beginning, overall increased anxiety and OCD behaviors, some reduction in appetite, and extreme hyper activity at rebound. Overall we think his experience was positive with Focalin. Yes we had to switch him but we know this can happen as some medications can become less effective for some people overtime (especially with growing children.) Now he's on Metadate CD 20 MG (apparently same family as Focalin). So far so good. Metadate lasts about 9 hours (so long enough for school). It doesn't trigger anxiety but it does have some minor rebound effect (increase hyperactivity and energy). Hope this info helps.
