Guest guest
I am not on any probiotics. The two antibiotics that I am taking for Diverticulitis are powerful and in theory killy all the bad stuff in my gut but I know it will kill all the good also. I as I remember the only legal probiotic is ones that carry the Lactobacillus only, is this correct? If I start on that will it be enough to take care of the restoration of good bact in my intestinal track? Sandy
Guest guest
Hi Sandy. I'm sorry about your diverticulitis. I hope you are better soon. Since you follow SCD for yourself and your son, I had assumed that you were making and eating yogurt the SCD way. The yogurt is a very important component of SCD, so as to increase the population of good bacteria in your intestines while the rest of the diet starves out the bad bacteria. At least, that is my understanding based on what I have read so far. I've only been on SCD for 7 days, so I'm not an expert. But I have already made my first batch of yogurt, using Lyosan Yogourmet freeze-dried yogurt starter that contains 3 important strains of bacteria, lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus acidophilus, and S. thermophilus. I got mine at the health food store where I bought the yogurt maker, but I will try to find a more conveniently located store for this product or else buy it online when I am down to the last few packets. I have seen some references to Lyosan capsules, but I don't know where those are sold, other than possibly Lucy's Kitchen in the USA. I am assuming that they contain the same 3 bacterial strains as the yogurt starter. I have wasted many hours at health food stores lately, trying to find probiotic capsules that contain only these bacteria and no bifida or other illegal ingredients. So far, I have found 2 brands of plain acidophilus. I could not find any probiotics with either of the other 2 Lyosan strains that had no illegals. I am still surprised that you don't take probiotics. I strongly urge you to get some. I don't know whether you or your son can tolerate milk proteins that would be present in home-made cow milk yogurt. If not, there are recipes for making yogurt out of goat milk or nuts. Hope this helps. Ellen in Toronto MCS, IBS, fibromyalgia, ME/CFIDS SCD March 17, 2008 " mom4him48 " wrote: >I am not on any probiotics. Guest guest
Sandy It's important to take legal probiotics during a course of antibiotics so you can replace the beneficial bacteria that will be killed off along with the bad. You do have to time the dose of acidophilus or yogurt, though. Wait 2 to 3 hours after a dose of antibiotics to take the probiotic. When I'm on antibiotics I take 2 doses of it per day (my body doesn't tolerate 3 or 4 which is the normal dose), so I take acidophilus once a day, 3 hours after the first antibiotic dose of the day. My normal acidophilus dose is once every 3 days, so I take it a lot more often during my antibiotics course. I don't eat yogurt, but if you do, you would follow the same procedure. Wait 2 to 3 hours after taking a dose of antibiotic then have some yogurt. Otherwise the beneficial bacteria in yogurt will be killed off by the antibiotic. And I also watch my foods while I'm taking antibiotics so I don't overdo the foods that feed yeast. Yeast/candida are opportunistic, and will increase to levels that cause symptoms if given the chance. Yeast love sweets/sugars, starches, molds, and fermented. So I don't eat much fruit, no honey, no dried beans, no cheese or mushrooms, no vinegar or wine. I'm careful during the antibiotics course, plus a few weeks afterward. Then I go back to normal eating. There are several sources of legal Acidophilus. Kirkman Labs, GIProHealth, Lucy's Kitchen Shop, and Custom Probiotics. You need the antibiotics to take care of your diverticulitis. But you also have to take some precautions to replace the levels of beneficial bacteria so other bad microorganisms don't take hold. Guest guest
Hi Ellen > Hi Sandy. I'm sorry about your diverticulitis. I hope you are better soon. Thankyou. > Since you follow SCD for yourself and your son, I had assumed that you were > making and eating yogurt the SCD way. We do use SCD goat yogurt for the kids(they love it) but I don't eat it as even if I lick the spoon it makes my tummy hurt. I haven't been on any other pro biotic because we were on the diet for Mr T and I guess I figured I didn't really need to spend the money on it for me.(Eyes role) > I have seen some references to Lyosan capsules, but I don't know where those > are sold, Here is a site that sells the Lyosan capsules. I will be ordering some as soon as I get this finished. > I don't know whether you or your son can tolerate milk proteins > that would be present in home-made cow milk yogurt. I have some on order(last summer the lady that I get my milks from started making the goat yogurt for me. She charges a very minimal extra and with our full life it is a great blessing. She is such a support of us.) Thanks for your reply. Be blessed Sandy
Guest guest
The last time I was put on anitbiotics my UC got really bad. This is before I educated myself and started a SCD. I'm doing so much better now and only 2 months into the SCD. On the IBS/IBD forum there is a good Forum that discusses probiotics. The link http://www.ibsgroup.org/forums/index.php? s=93ab58f615c460c5933f58ae2c55b318 & showforum=40 There is probiotic right now that is getting alot of good feedback from people using it and it is insulin free. Here is the discussion thread. http://www.ibsgroup.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=92317 Here is the weblink to the product. http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/probiotics/inulin/inulin_404_90.ht ml I know everyones body is different but it worth looking at.
