Guest guest
Hi Misty and . I am in my third week on SCD. Going cold-turkey off psyllium powder was not pleasant, and giving up snacking on nuts was even worse. I already take large doses of magnesium and vitamin C, because of my chronic illnesses, but even they couldn't make up for the loss of psyllium and nuts. I added very diluted prune juice during the first week. I had read, on a FAQ of answers from Elaine Gottschalk, that pure prune juice with no added sugar could be used, if mixed with an equal volume of orange juice. I am allergic to oranges, so I mixed the pure prune juice with water and a bit of lemon juice. But, since it was my first week on SCD, I diluted the prune juice as 1 part prune juice, 4 parts water, 1 tsp lemon juice. Even that didn't help much, so I added 1 tsp of nut butter daily after 1 week. That really helped. I also find that nut butter is more convenient than psyllium, as I don't have to find a window of opportunity to have the nut butter, well away from when I take my medications or supplements, the way I did with psyllium. I didn't have my first batch of yogurt ready to eat until my sixth day on SCD. Eating increasing volumes of yogurt and yogurt cheese each week seems to be helping with regularity too, and I don't need prune juice anymore. The fact that I was able introduce the nut butters so early doesn't mean that other people on this list could do the same. I don't have UC or Crohn's; I have irritable bowel syndrome, but that might be just because I have fibromyalgia. Of more concern to me, recent medical lab tests have shown that I was not absorbing the minerals and other expensive supplements I have been taking. Also, I tend to develop new food allergies all the time. I also have a chronic, non-Candida yeast infection, something common to all the women in my family (possibly congenital?). For all these reasons, my doctor recommended that I start on SCD with the introductory program, rather than simply picking and choosing SCD recipes to lower my carbohydrate intake, as I had originally planned. Since I did well with nut butters, I started baking with ground almonds this week. I made a dozen muffin-mix muffins (recipe in Everyday Grain-Free Gourmet) with frozen berries, and they are delicious. So far, other than increased muscle weakness and fatigue, all effects of this diet are positive for me. I have lost 10 pounds in the first 17 days, so my clothes are more comfortable, and I have hopes of eventually reaching a healthy weight. It's also nice to know that I am eating healthier foods. Hope this helps. Ellen in Toronto IBS, MCS, allergies, fibromyalgia, ME/CFIDS SCD March 17, 2008 .. " Misty Kimble " wrote: > The BTVC book says to eat stewed prunes once a week. Guest guest
Hope the suggestions work. C can be just as bad as D in my opinion. Oh, I started eating cashew butter 2 days ago, about a TBS a day and so far so good. I had read they are easier to digest. If all goes well with cashew, i'll try to graduate to other nuts and then cooking with nut flours. Best of luck, Misty Kimble , LA CD SCD - Jan 5, 08 "nicole.prieur" wrote: Thank you very much Ellen and Misty.
