The purposes of the

evaluation are to determine current level of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists, doctoral level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting clinicians from CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that individuals diagnosed with autism and their families are connected to CARD services and supports. State-of-the-art assessment measures, such as the ADOS and ADI-R are used in ASAC evaluations. For more information or to schedule

Although targeted for parents of students with disabilities, the workshops are open to all interested parents. On December 4, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. a free workshop titled, "Strategies to Help Your Child Keep-up with the Handwriting Demands of the Classroom," will be offered at Fox Trail Elementary School (Music Room 109). This workshop is designed to give parents an overview of how handwriting relates to the development of fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills and the ability to acquire new concepts. Parents will gain an understanding of how to facilitate the progression of these skills. To register for either workshop, or for more information on other workshops being offered, contact DiLuzio at . ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weekly Groups that

Emphasize Social Understanding and Problem Solving to Successful Peer Relationships We are currently offering several social groups in our Coral Gables office. Group fee is $75 per session ($65 if paid by 6-week session in advance) and run weekly. If individual referred is not an existing client in our office, there will need to be an initial consultation meeting with parent(s) and child to obtain history and set up treatment goals. This will ensure that the child is matched to the most appropriate

group. For more information or any questions, please feel free to contact the office. Group Days, Times, and Ages Tuesdays, 7:00 p.m., Boys, Ages 10-12 Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m., Boys, Ages 7-9 Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m., Boys, Ages 8-9 Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m., Boys, Middle School Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m., Coed, High School/College/Young Adult Thursdays, 4:00 p.m., Coed, Ages 6-9 Thursdays, 5:00 p.m., Boys, Ages 8-10 Thursdays, 6:00 p.m., Coed, Ages 11-13 Group Facilitators: ne Wardy, MS and Annette Mateu, MS The main goal of the Social Group curriculum is to have fun and feel successful being with others. The groups differ from other social skills training in that it emphasizes social understanding rather than skill training. · The group purpose is to provide an entertaining and well-structured outlet where individuals can learn and become fluent in higher social thinking (i.e., Theory of Mind). Theory of Mind refers to the ability to understand that others have beliefs, desires, and intentions that are different from one's own. · Activities are based on social understanding issues, confidence building, as well as relationship development. Social games and cooperative learning activities provide a hands-on approach in order to practice such concepts as encouragement, reflective listening, complementing, offering help to another as well as successful conversation skills. Categories covered include cooperative play skills, friendship management, self regulation and conflict resolution techniques. · In the groups, clients practice making social guesses and trying out strategies, rather than social scripting. Visual strategies are used to help clients understand their own unique way of thinking as well as develop a social curiosity about the thoughts, feelings and actions of others. · Another focus of the groups pertains to planning skills such as effective problem solving and better decision-making in order to promote better organization. *If you would like to be added to our email list or if you would like to be removed from our email list, please click here: http://www.umcard.org/contact.php UM-NSU CARD is a state-funded resource and support program dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism and related disabilities including deaf-blindness and pervasive developmental disorders.
