This is a resend, sorry if you get it twice, I did not see it post to

the list. - andrew

I've been on SCD for about a year and a half now. I seem to be

having my first flare. I have Crohn's with strictures. A flare for

me usually consists of a blockage and the pain that goes along with

that until it passes or I throw up. This one lasted about 30 hours.

The meal before the flare I ate an SCD legal soup (that I made). I ate

that same soup for dinner the night before without incident. The soup

had cabbage and cauliflower. I eat cabbage regularly as sauerkraut

and sometimes cauliflower typically steamed. My question is does this

likely mean this was something in the soup or should I examine my diet

to see if something illegal has slipped in?

Sorry for the delay in answering -- I did something silly last night,

went to a performance of Haydn's " The Creation " by the

Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, instead of answering all my

emails which have piled up while I was out of town.

Examining your diet to see if an illegal has slipped in is always a good

idea.

In my experience, though, too much fiber, whether it's too many almond

flour muffins or too much fibrous veggies can be an issue. (I do OK with

pureed celeriac, which is fibrous, in the form of mock mashed potatoes.

It's all squished up and easily digested. But too many whole carrots or

lettuce or things like that can be a problem.

If I read your message correctly, you usually eat either cabbage as

sauerkraut, OR well-steamed cauliflower, not both together?

Your soup had very fibrous cabbage, which wasn't broken down by being

fermented into sauerkraut. It also had cauliflower, which is a member of

the cabbage family. Non-fermented cabbage family members can sometimes be

an issue for us.

Another thing is that you did the double-whammy two nights in a row. I

often find that I can tolerate something ONCE, but if I go back and have

it a second time the next night, it'll grab me.

If you have any of that soup left, put it in a container, and freeze it

for later, when you're feeling better.

You might want to drop back to the intro diet for a few days to give this

a chance to pass, as it were.

If you don't want to miss the good probiotics in homemade sauerkraut, you

can drink the juice, and not actually eat the cabbage for a period of

time.

Keep an eye on your symptoms, and if they don't resolve or get worse --

get thee to a doctor, because a blockage at strictures is nothing to

piddle around with.
