Guest guest
Hi Jodi, As for the equipment in the apartment kitchen, can you just ask the renter what is available? Blenders I think are still fairly rare in Germany, a lot of people use a handmixer instead. Instead of lugging an American blender or handmixer and a converter over there, you may just be better off buying a handmixer there. Here'a a sample from Braun for 26 euro http://www.amazon.de/Braun-Multiquick-Advantage-MR-4000/dp/B000IJ0VP2/ref=sr _1_7?ie=UTF8 & s=home-garden & qid=1205510655 & sr=1-7 You should be able to get a similar pricing in a store, or probably cheaper pricing for a no-name brand. I believer a yogurt maker would work with a converter, but have never tried. As for yogurt starter, I bring my own powder starters over and use those with milk I buy there. As for groceries, in general the labeling is better than in the US. If you cannot find bio products (= organic), then it's fine to buy regular milk and meets/seafood. What can be tricky (just like in the US) is to find cream (Sahne) that has no carrageen or other emulsifiers. The Edeka chain of stores usually carries the Weihenstephan brand (blue-white label) in a GLASS bottle, which is fine. Don't buy the Weihenstephan cream in the plastic container, though, which does have emulsifiers. With Hamburg being close to the North Sea, there will be fish and seafood available. As you pointed out, Easter Sunday and Monday are a holiday, and most, if not all stores will be closed. There may be some open grocery stores, maybe by the airport. I have copied Sabine on this email. She runs the German SCD email group, and may be able to give you pointers for stores open over Eater weekend, as well as where to buy seafood and other food items. Enjoy your vacation, Kathleen _______________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 7. germany trip Posted by: " jodah235 " jodah235@... jodah235 Date: Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:42 pm ((PDT)) anyone do this diet in germany? my husband and i will be in hamburg for 9 days at the end of the month. we will be in an apartment with a fully equipt kitchen although i do not know what kind of equipment it will have like blender? don't know if i should take blender and yogurt maker from here or if i need to buy portable ones for travel. all call for electricity which means i need a converter in the first place. i would like to be able to make fruit smoothies while i am there. i was wondering if labeling in germany is better than it is here? would i be safe buying bio products like milk for the yogurt and butter and meat? what about fish? where is it best to buy fish? any pointers would be great. i realize we will be arriving there easter saturday on the 22nd and monday is easter as well. am i going to have a problem food shopping??? will everything be closed? thank you, jodi scd 5 months crohn's/colitis Messages in this topic (1) ________________________________________________________________________
