The

Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic (ASAC),

located

in Coral Gables, Florida, provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to

children and adults to investigate the possibility of an autism spectrum

disorder (ASD). The purposes of the evaluation are to determine current level

of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC

includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in

diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists,

doctoral level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting

clinicians from CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that

Dear Parent,

I am writing this letter to offer your family an opportunity to

participate in a research study at the Brown Center for Children.  Researchers at the Brown Center for Children are investigating signs of autism

in early infancy. This study analyzes the sounds that babies make in the first

6 months of life.  Researchers will analyze the cries of babies that parents

have recorded on home videotapes.

For this study, we are looking for families who:

• have a child

with an autism spectrum disorder;

• have videotapes of the

child when they were young infants (less than 6 months of age) that include

some episodes of crying or fussing; and

• are from any part

of the country!  Since videotapes of the child are being used, you do not need

to live nearby the Brown Center for Children to participate.

Brown

Center for Children staff will work with families by phone and mail. Our staff

will assist families to identify appropriate videotapes and will provide

families with postage-paid mailers for study materials.  Family participation in

this study will also involve the completion of questionnaires about the child

that will take approximately one hour.

Thank

you for taking the time to consider helping us with the study.  It is our hope

your participation in this study will increase our knowledge of early signs of

autism spectrum disorders.  Please call , or email WHAutism@...,  if you are

interested in the study or would like to learn more about participation. We

will be happy to discuss this project with you in greater detail.

Sincerely,

Sheinkopf, Ph.D.

The main goal of the Social

Group curriculum is to have fun and feel successful being with

others. The groups differ from other social skills training

in that it emphasizes social understanding rather than skill training.

·

The group purpose

is to provide an entertaining and well-structured outlet where individuals can

learn and become fluent in higher social thinking (i.e., Theory of Mind).

Theory of Mind refers to the ability to understand that others have beliefs,

desires, and intentions that are different from one’s own.

·

Activities are

based on social understanding issues, confidence building, as well as

relationship development.

Social games and cooperative

learning activities provide a hands-on approach in order to practice such

concepts as encouragement, reflective listening, complementing, offering

help to another as well as successful conversation skills.

Categories covered include

cooperative play skills, friendship management, self regulation and

conflict resolution techniques.

·

In the groups,

clients practice making social guesses and trying out strategies, rather than

social scripting.

Visual strategies are used

to help clients understand their own unique way of thinking as well as develop

a social curiosity about the thoughts, feelings and actions of others.

·

Another focus of

the groups pertains to planning skills such as effective problem solving and

better decision-making in order to promote better organization.
