Guest guest
Thanks, Marie. She is a sweet lady, though I must admit I "faked" it with her a lot bc she TALKS SO FAST AND DOESN'T SLOW DOWN WHEN I GET LOST (you don't have to fwd that part to her ok?! ha ha) She is a super lady and I only met her that once in Houston when I also met you and some others for the first time. I knew she'd been deaf for a long time, she was talking to and I a lot and she'd say "Carla you must use your voice, do it!" Scared me lol, finally I was thinking "how does she know I'm not?" (it's a bad habit I don't use it much, I only mouth around yall.) Anyway I realized it was that tactilator device she wears. She told us she is a big advocate of keeping a good speaking voice, practicing with it in front of the mirror etc. I do just what you mentioned below. I think when I first went deaf I thought I still kinda heard my voice and felt more in control, but now I really don't and I get so lazy! Bobby never reminds me when I do this, but if I ask he's honest. I hated my voice before so can't imagine how awful it must sound now! Me, a deaf Ellie May Clampet (I'm serious, I'm so glad yall are deaf too!) BTW, Jenn, doya still wear your tactile? Anyone else? I still am interested but I'm getting an ABI soon, do they clash? lie is fine, going to ALDA meeting with us. I once participated in a "voice after deafness" program, at MIT,, but unfortunately I didn't go deaf fast enough, and I got dropped! LOL The idea is not that you heard before, but that you cannot hear yourself voice afterwards, so in time, you stop to drop endings, etc. A speech therapist makes you aware and corrects it. Altho when I was still hearing, I never had any trouble with any of the Crew speech that I can remember. But I would think the longer you are deaf, the more chance of this. I will forward your message to ie and see if she replies. Marie
