Kaufman seminar

Hi everyone,

I was on the Kaufman site and found that there is a seminar very close to

my home in about 2 weeks. I saw that it's for SP's but it said they allow

parents to attend.

I'm wondering if anyone has been to the " Evaluation and Treatment of

Children with Apraxia of Speech " seminar (sponsored by Northern

Speech/National Rehab Services)? If so, is it something that would go

totally over my head, or will it be helpful? It costs $159.00, so I don't

want to waste the money if I'm not going to understand a word of what they

are saying!

They are probably booked, but I thought I might give it a try.

Thanks!

Hi Wendi,

My speech therapist just went to the Kaufman seminar, and she said there

were parents there, and that during lunch Ms. Kaufman " lunched " with the

parents.

I saw the handout from the course, and it did not look " over the top " .

I wanted to go to the meeting on LI on 17th, but I'm due to give birth on

the 14th, and decided it wasn't wise to plan to attend! I think it will be

very managable to understand; some may be a little too " speech " oriented ( I

don't know the signs/symbols for all the different a and e sounds for

example), but overall, I'm sure it will be worthwhile.

Wendi-

I am planning on attending the seminar on the 17th in Long Island. I just

sent in my registration today. FYI -- the cost for parents is only $80!! I

agree that some of it may " go over my head " but it seems like an opportunity

not to be missed. I have heard such wonderful things about Kaufman

that I am very eager to hear her speak.

Maybe I'll see you there.

I would very much like to go, and I have the paperwork on my kitchen counter

waiting for me to make a final decision as to whether or not I'm going.

I am leaving to go to a wedding in Chicago this Thurs through early Tues of

next week, which is something I've never done in the almost 19 yrs that I've

been a mom. Sooo--my husband will be here with 6 of the kids

(I'm taking one child with me) and the baby and toddler, etc, are all going

to be home with HIM!!!

I'm not sure how willing he's going to be for me to attend a full day

conference if I'm gone all weekend plus.

BUTTTT-- I also know that he had previously told me that he thinks it's a

good idea that I go, so if I say that I want to go, he'll be fine with it.

If you go-- I would love to meet up with you. I'm a little hesitant to

going alone-- I must admit--

I think I got a note about this from my sons ST at school.....and totally forgot

about it. Do you have a link with the info? I have to see how far Saddle Brook

is from me but if I can get a sitter I am going to try to be there. (If it

isn't too late to sign up.)

If anybody goes to this seminar. I think my son Logan is in her video

demonstration. When he was evaluated by her last March, she asked if she could

use

him in her tape demonstration for her seminar. I would love to hear if he is

Logan and he was sitting in her room with his twin sister Olivia. Olivia was

a helpful tool for Logan to be responsive and was kind enough to let

her in and we all saw how much more responsive Logan was with another child in

the room, especially it being his twin sister. You may see my kids in her

demos. Would love to hear if you see them for those who go to the seminar.

To those in NJ thinking of going to Kaufman's seminar - GO!!!!! I went to

a seminar she did here in IL a few years ago and she is informative, funny,

encouraging, and amazing. In fact, as soon as the seminar was over, I contacted

her to do an eval for Josh. Her eval was great, very thorough, very helpful,

and, best of all, she is so respected by school districts that we had no problem

getting more therapy for Josh once we had 's eval. So, by all means, if

you can work it out with spouses or significant others or kidsitters watching

your kids - GO!!!!

-Where in Saddle Brook? I might ask my mom to go for me. I used to work

at the Saddle Brook Diner after I graduated from college!

Does anyone know where to get the Kaufman Apraxia cards at a good

price?

I attended one of her seminars about 6 months ago. I really enjoyed

it. She gave a lot of tips on working with apraxic children. Also, she

makes a point of having lunch with all the moms in her class. That way

the moms can ask specific questions about their kids. I think we had

about 9 moms and she made sure to question every mom about their child.

She had her workbooks and kits there for sale....I think they were at

a discount. So, if you want to purchase one do it at her seminar.
