Guest guest
i was at the farmers market in union square in nyc. i spoke to the bee man from " berkshire berries " - a total hoot. he looked at me like i was crazy after i asked him about his honey, why the bees are disappearing, the general process of making honey and why some maufacturers cut the honey with corn syrup. (i specifically asked about this out of concern after what i read here in a post.. perhaps as a reason why some brands of honey- even organic make me sick!) he explained to me that he has not heard of maufacturers cutting the honey with corn syrup. he has heard of bee keepers force feeding the actual bees corn syrup and not really allowing them to roam too much. he also told me about how bad it is to heat raw honey and that by heating it it activates certain poisons in the honey (from the poison flowers that the bees go to) i thought all of this was very interesting. as i am afraid to eat raw honey with all the added bacteria that it might have. i know on one hand its better for my immune system to consume raw honey in my smoothie but on the other hand i worry about the bacteria for my gut and how i got so sick. but if heating honey in the first place is bad where does that leave me? i mean they must heat it if it isn't raw. also, i just remembered a scandal from when i was a little girl visiting my grandparents in israel. it was rosh hashana (jewish new year) and it is customary to eat honey with apples as symbolism for the upcoming sweet new year. anyway, many people buy honey. that specific year some newspaper (i think) uncovered that some of the big companies had put 1/2 molasses in with the honey! it gives it an amber hue but later the color somehow didn't look right and then there was some investigation. is it even legal to cut the honey with corn syrup in this country? anyway i thought it was interesting from the bee man himself. jodi
Guest guest
Jodi, Nice and interesting post. It really makes me smile to see how you have developed such a keen interest in the many aspects and details of SCD. You seem really excited and curious about it. I predict you will wind up behind the keyboard weekends like Marilyn and me and the rest who are helping others. What your BB guy is saying is honey is not SUPPOSED to be cut with added stuff. *According to Wikopedia: Honey is a sweet and viscous fluid produced by honey bees (and some other species[1]), and derived from the nectar of flowers. According to the United States National Honey Board and various international food regulations, " honey stipulates a pure product that does not allow for the addition of any other substance...this includes, but is not limited to, water or other sweeteners " . This article refers exclusively to the honey produced by honey bees (the genus Apis); honey produced by other bees or other insects has very different properties.[2] I don't know all the implications about honey for others but here's my story. We have a clear white pasteurized and filtered honey in Canada called " Bee. " I am great with it and I think it even keeps me from getting the frequent colds I used to have. In season I go to an organic market every Saturday and see many tempting raw honey selections from local beekeepers but I have to pass as they may have serious consequences. One day my daughter and I were in a jewelry store. She left me for a few minutes to go to other shops. When she returned she had a sample of some bee products and brought them near me and I nearly passed out. I must be allergic to bee pollen. > i was at the farmers market in union square in nyc. > i spoke to the bee man from " berkshire berries " - a total hoot. > > he looked at me like i was crazy after i asked him about his honey, > why the bees are disappearing, the general process of making honey and > why some maufacturers cut the honey with corn syrup. Guest guest
Hi Carol, First of all that's an awesome compliment! So thank you! I feel that SCD is giving me back my life. A life with no pain? Or pain not dominating every move and thought that I make? Is that possible? Maybe in my dreams all of these years. But, I see it's working and I really want to learn! And that brings me to the point that I can only *hope* to understand and know things the way you gals do! But ya'll are so eloquent and just over-flowing with knowledge and info it's amazing. lin's post the other day about the fructose was fan-friggen-tastic!! > Jodi, > Nice and interesting post.
