I got a pneumonia shot, you only need them like once every 5 years or

something like that if you need a second dose.

I am working so I cant answer the second part. So I am sure others

will jump in for that one!

Hi,

I have the pneumonia shot, I had the first one last year.

I quit work when it became too much. When I wasn't able to have ANY quality of home life because I spent it recovering from work. I went from running a pub, to working in an office, then when I found that I was coming home from work, having something to eat and going to bed so that I could make it up in time for work, and weekends I'd spend most of it asleep, only getting up for a few hours a day, before going back to bed. I realised that it was rediculous to try to keep up with that lifestyle. My doc had been telling me to give up for a while, but I'm a stubborn girl!

Have had pneumonia shot. Most here have I would assume.

Of course, now have pneumonia.....lol.....but I don't think the kind

the shot is designed to protect us against.

Quit work. I already was on disability for other reasons so this just

added to that.

Thank you for the replies to my question. I suppose it sounds silly and I should know when to quit work but it is a very difficult decision. I really enjoy my job but it carries a lot of responsibility and I find that I am having some trouble remembering the things that I should. The worst thing for me would be to screw up at work and have to leave under a cloud. Perhaps it is better to leave while my reputation in the company is intact. Hi, pneumonia shots are very important to all of us with lung disease. Get one every 5 years. And just as important is the flu shot yearly.  I am looking forward to my second p shot in 2009. I will sooo gladly go get one.  lol Love and Prayers, Peggy  ipf 6/04 Florida"Worry looks around, Sorry looks back, Faith looks up." I was wondering if anyone has had a pneumonia shot? I would suppose finances play a huge part...can you afford to be without your pay check/health insurance?

I think quitting work is such a personal thing based on your own

quality of life and, unfortunately, financial considerations. For me

today, I don't have the energy to be a productive worker, couldn't do

anything like a full day, and just getting ready for it would almost

make me too tired to do it. I am able to do what I need to but

certainly not at a work pace. For example, something as simple as

getting ready in the mornings takes me twice as long as before.

Shaving, showering, and dressing require considerable time and

effort. Now, not working, I have that time. But at the pace I do

things and the energy level I have I'd be a pretty lousy employee.

Also, if you have the choice it becomes a matter of how do you want

to spend your life. Many have no choice but to keep working because

of finances. But, if I had kids and could afford to, knowing my time

was very limited with them, I'd want to not work.

Diane,

I did exactly what you're worried about doing. I had a good job with quite a bit of responsibility. Alot of folks depended on me and the fact that I had always done my job accurately and dependably. I'm very stubborn, refused to acknowledge that I was ill and was forgetting things, and not following through the way I had always done. Can you say DENIAL??? Now this was prior to my diagnosis and I had no idea what was wrong with me but on some level I knew something was radically wrong. I even tried to go back to work post diagnosis with my oxygen etc. That didn't work out at all.

It's different for everyone of course. I think I did some damage to my memory and critical thinking with low O2 levels for months before I was diagnosed properly. But I worked because I'm a single mom and was supporting myself and my son. I don't know if I would do it differently if I had it to do over. I don't honestly know what else I could have done. It all worked out ok, I got my SSDI with little difficulty and my son is now out on his own, reasonably self sufficient.

Listen carefully to what your own heart is telling you and follow that.

Love,

Beth in NC Fibrotic NSIP 06/06.

Well, Diane, you have to know when is right for you. You might be

comfortable developing crutches for the memory items depending on

what they are. For instance, I could once remember everything. Now, I

have lists galore and I couldn't live with a calendar and I use my

cell phone all the time to set reminders.

However, when you become uncomfortable to the point of a fun job

becoming stressful and lacking confidence in yourself, then I think

continuing would be emotionally draining and on top of the disease

that would be a bit much.

Bruce/ Beth:

Thanks for your comments. I will look at your comments and make a decision soon. I will be fine financially as my employer continues to pay all the health care costs and give me my salary as usual. I am very lucky that I work for such a great company. My problem is that I can still function when my sats are 88 and 89. I have not been using my oxygen as I should and probably accounts for the forgetfulness. I think I have been without oxygen for so long, I have adapted to going without. I really appreciate your input and will ponder carefully what each of you has said. I think Beth has hit the nail on the head with DENIAL. Thanks Beth. Diane IPF June 07New Brunswick, Canada

The fact that you can continue to function at 88-89 doesn't mean

thats good for you. I'm sure I semi-functioned a long time before I

was diagnosed at low levels. We do get use to being out of breath.

However, you need to use your oxygen and maintain above 90 for two

reasons. First, is the obvious, energy. But the second is the most

important and that is to protect your organs. Every organ of your

body is impacted by low oxygen. And when you say 88-89, something

tells me that when you really get in a hurry or exert yourself around

the office its lower than that. If it were just the out of breath,

right now I'd be using it only for the treadmill. But, I want every

other organ to outlast my lungs. Whatever you decide about work,

please use your oxygen.

Repeat 100 times after me. Oxygen is my friend. lol

Yes, I've had the pneumonis shot since DX

and the flu shot and this year the Shingles vaccine as well!!!

Sort of a pin cushion for a few days!

I was a part-time college instructor...I was too short of breath from

class instruction and could not carry text books or climb

steps and I lost all energy. It wasn't a difficult choice for me. I

had planned to teach for a few more years...but I don't miss it now!

I do have a great husband who thankfully owns his business so that my

job was not financially necessary!

I image that that is not the case for many people and I cannot fathom

having financial trouble on top of this diagnosis.

Hi !

Sorry I didn't get back to you a couple of days ago.

I had the pneumonia shot in the ICU last year, while I had

pneumonia. Now doesn't that seem like closing the gate after the

horse got out? Evidently the shot lasts 5 years.

Diane I think only you can make that decision. Do your coworkers,

your boss anybody know what you have and what is going on? Could you

lesson some responsiblity? These are just some of the questions I

would ask myself. But again only you can answer the question for

yourself.

Thanks, Sandie. My boss is well aware of my condition and has been extremely supportive. He has said to come in when I feel like it or work from home if I want. I guess the problem is me and knowing that I am not working at 100%. I will just have to decide if this is something I can cope with. Again, thanks for the response. I think that is, at least in my case, from being so independent and stubborn. I bet my kids would call me bossy and I may have heard the term control freak once or twice! Diane IPF June 07New Brunswick, Canada

Sandie...do you girls know the Serenity Prayer?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.

Courage to change the things I can and the

Wisdom to know the difference.

I love this little poem. Think of frequently every day.

Peace, Serenity, Comfort.

Wild fun and excitement are often not reachable. But aren't the above

what we really all need. I wish I'd worked more long ago on seeking

those. Today I find them easier...well, except when dealing with

Triage and Pulmonologist's nurse....but at least I strive more for

them, knowing they are what I need.
