Guest guest
Hi Everyone.. I was told by both Dr. H. and our speech therapist that the hypotonia that is part of an RSS kid (poor muscle tone) can also be present in the mouth muscles. So, 's speech is okay in terms of language development, but very, very poor in terms of articulation. He just doesn't have the musculature to make clear sounds. However, we notice that if we really work with him and encourage him to say the word over and over he will eventually get it right. It is almost as if he is exercising his mouth muscles and building strength. The speech therapist said that sucking beverages out of a straw is an easy little exercise we can have him do. He also takes forever to chew food, especially meats, so I think his overall mouth " strength " is low. We had the speech therapist come in for an evaluation, but now we want to hire her back for actual ongoing help. I'll let you know what she tells me. Ken, didn't you have a lot of experience with speech therapists???? Katy
