Guest guest
I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37 and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and . I was widowed when I was 26 yrs old , My husband was an air traffic controller at O'hare and we had a private plane that we owned with 3 other people. It was nice cause they used it on the weekends and he rarely had them off, so we were able to go alot of places. It is really to bad the kids dont remember being nose to nose with Mt Rushmore but that is another story. We were having trouble with the landing gear and it was fixed or so we thought but his plane crashed and the safety board said it was pilot error. It was,I thought the hardest time of my life but now this.My children all graduated from college and are wonderful adults but this is very hard for them. I am very close to my parents. They came to the house every Tuesday to check on me and the kids and we spent vacations and lots of weekends with them. I have not told them because they are 83 yrs old and it would just devastate them . I am not on oxygen yet and cant do the thing I used to but I put on a good act for them. My Dad is the main cause of stress for me now cause he is having TIA's. I cant even think about losing them . They were and still are my rock . I married my best friends brother in March 2004 . I have known him since I was 8 yrs old, His name is Clyde . His Mom caught the bouquet at my 1st wedding . She set us up, she thought we were a perfect pair and she was right . He is a wonderful man. He was never married so he has an instant family and he is thrilled as he has seen my kids grow up . I feel bad that This is what he signed up for. We went to New Zealand for our honeymoon and hope to travel as long as we can. I have good and bad days and other AI that complicate things but I am to crazy about my grandsons and will fight this monster all the way. Enough about me . Guest guest
I will soon be 59 years old. I have 5 wonderful grown children, 2 great sons-in-law, a fantastic daughter-in-law and 8 beautiful grandchildren.4 girls and 4 boys.My husband and I divorced in 1982 so I more or less raised my children myself. I am very proud of them all. This year my oldest grandchild graduates from high school and I can't wait to watch him receive his diploma. I hope to be able to watch the other seven do the same. Until June of this year I worked for a marine accessory manufacturer. This September would have been my 20th year anniversary but unfortunately my doctors put me out of work. I do miss my job very much but was unable to do the heavy lifting it required any longer. I really don't have much else to say as my life has centered around my children, grandchildren, a few close friends and my job. I lost my mother when I was 5 years old and my father when I was 23. I was always the strong one because I had to be and now I find it hard to have to rely on others. If anyone wants to know more about me just e-mail me and I will be glad to answer. Thank you Mae T IPF NY kiki boettin wrote: I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and. Guest guest
Zena, I knew there was something special about you fellow greyhound lover! I had a retired racer named Ruger for 8 years until I became to ill to take care of him. I just couldn't walk him the way he needed to be walked. You know greyhounds! The rescue group I had gotten him from originally placed him with another family and I hear he is still going strong at age 11. I miss him but I'm glad he's a happy boy. How long have you had your latest grey? Beth in NC age 48 Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Re: Show of hands ? Please I'm 38 years old, I started to get stiffness and pain in the joints along with SOB and frequent chest infections. I was tested and treated for arthritis although my bloods were negative and the various treatments I was given weren't that helpful. My mum had passed away from lung cancer (lifetime non smoker) and had split up with my fiance shortly before the symptoms showed themselves and alot of my symptoms were put down to stress. I was rushed into hospital when I was 25 with multiple pulmonary embolisms, which were treated and they diagnosed dermatomyositis, I had regular scans following the PE's and my docs just tarted talking about PF, like it was nothing to worry about. Phrases like 'a touch of' and 'slight' were used. I had regular lung functions and things were stable. Other problems were picked up like anti cardio lipins and 'slight' reynaulds. I was also told that due to my various conditions and my meds, that I wouldn't be able to have children. Although I wasn't thinking about children at the time I was devastated that the choice had been taken away from me. So I was rather surprised to find that I was pregnant in 2001! It was a complicated pregnancy, but as I had no other dependants, it wasn't a big problem as if I didn't feel like getting out of bed, I didn't have to. One cold weekend, 6 weeks before my due date, Rob had gone to a wedding 160 miles away. I had decided not to go as I didn't fancy the journey while heavily pregnant and didn't want to be sitting there while everyone else was dancing. What a good job. Rob had been gone about 20 mins before I was on the phone to the labour ward. My best friend got me to hospital, where they assured me that I wasn't in labour but because of my other problems they'll keep me in over night for observation. 25 mins after that Lilith sprang into the world! She was 3lb 10oz, but described as disgustingly healthy. My PFT's remained stable up until last year, where they have plummetted and I have gone from 'a touch of PF' to 'some sparing of the left lobe' I have done all sorts of jobs including riding instructor, florist, office worker and pub manager. My biggest regret is giving up the horses, as I thought it was something I could always go back to. Now I wish I'd stayed with the horses until it either lost it's appeal naturally, or I became too ill to do the job. I met Rob in 2000 and he is the love of my life, although he drives me nuts from time to time! I have an elderly retired greyhound, she's my third, I have a huge soft spot for greyhounds. My hobbies include 17th century reenacting, sewing, and anything to do with food, from where it comes from, growing it, cooking it and finally eating it. I love rugby and reading, especially Terry Pratchett. My Dad is 72 and is waiting for corrective surgery on a hip replacement. He's suffered heterotropic ossification, which is excess bone growth at the site of the replacement and he currently has less mobility than he had before the op, but hopefully he will be having the corrective surgery in a couple of weeks. Guest guest
Ooooooooooooh now let me talk greyhounds Jess is 12, and I've only had her for coming up to 3 years. she was my friends dog, but due to a divorce and a nomadic existance he'd been looking for somewhere to house her. At the time I had one greyhound, my lovely old boy Buddy, and I'd recently lost Honey. She had developed bone cancer and a tumor had ruined her shoulder. She was too large and too old to contemplate an amputation, so I did the kindest thing. She was 12. I lost my old boy, who was the first greyhound that I got, and a total character, just over a year ago. He was 14 and a half and died of old age! It's not often you hear that. At the moment it's fortunate that Jess is an old girl and not too fussed about long walks anymore. I adore greyhounds, they get such bad press in this country about not being good family pets, but that is just so wrong. What was Ruger like? Guest guest
Oh Zena, the noise you hear in the background is my family shouting 'Don't get her started about that dog'... Ruger was and I'm assuming is a sweet, gentle extremely neurotic dog. He was the epitome of the greyhound cliche, "40 mph couch potato". We'd walk for an hour or more or he'd run in figure eights in the backyard and then collapse on the couch and sleep for hours. He loved to sprawl across my lap if I was sitting on the couch. He didn't realize that at 95 pounds he was a bit large to be a lap dog! He was very shy and easily bullied. My cat was the alpha animal in the house. Ruger didn't seem to realize he could have disposed of the cat with one bite and Paco just tormented him. Poor baby. He was terrified of children and hid when my nieces and nephews visited. But he was so sweet and loved me as though I was his mother. I love hearing about other people with greys, they are such wonderful dogs. I agree that it's wrong to say they don't make good family pets, in fact it's just the opposite in my opinion. Of course there are differences with individual dogs but like you I've known many greys that were part of happy families. I'm glad you still have Jess. She sounds so sweet. I miss having a dog to snuggle. Beth in NC age 48 Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 He was shy Re: Show of hands ? Guest guest
Well, as one who finds greyhound racing deplorable, although I don't mean to disrespect those who disagree...its just my personal feeling..., I so love to hear when they get a good home like the three of you have provided. They deserve it. > > > I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37 > > > and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and > > > . Guest guest
Bruce, in England, SOME greyhound trainers are honourable, putting the dogs welfare first. Some never destroy a dog who is just in want of a home, some put their medical needs first and don't push the dogs too far. The trainers that I got my first two dogs from were such people. I don't know about the ethics of the trainer who had Jess, but as she didn't actually make the grade and was rehomed with my friend very quickly, I'd say that he also had the welfare of the dog at heart. BUT far too many trainers treat the dogs like machines. Far too many greyhound pups are born in case one or two out of a litter make the grade. For the ones that don't, the very lucky ones are re homed. The not so lucky ones are destroyed fairly quickly and the really unlucky ones are simply let loose to fend for themselves. Greyhounds are supposed to have tattoos in their ears for instant recognition. Many of the abandoned ones have holes in their ears where the tat has been burnt away, including the soft tissue of the ear. Bent vets will give unwell dogs a full bill of health and performance enhancing drugs. Some dogs are kept in appauling conditions and can't be rehoused because of behavioural difficulties. It's devasting. We have far too many unwanted dogs in this country, and I don't just mean greyhounds. I don't hold with letting a bitch have just one litter, as it only adds to the problem. > > > > I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37> > > > and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and> > > > . Guest guest
Well, the neglect of any animal and the number of dogs and cats that end up in animal shelters and the number destroyed is horrifying. But, with greyhounds in particular, until they got enough bad publicity here, they had no concern for the dogs. Still, I don't like the racing and was invited when I lived in South Florida, always refusing. And, I'm so glad there are people like the three of you who wrote who are involved in taking the dogs needing a home. > > > > > I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37 > > > > > and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and > > > > > . Guest guest
Bruce, My baby Ruger was retired at age 3 after 2 years of racing. He was injured and his leg broken in training. Fortunately the track he was at had an injury fund and he was treated and turned over to the rescue group that I adopted him from. Many dogs are euthanized on the spot if they're injured in racing. He was emaciated when I got him as what's considered "racing weight" for greys is practically skelatal. They are wonderful dogs and really are lovely housepets. Their very quiet well mannered and generally sweet natured. I wish with all my heart I could have another one and like you it makes me happy to hear stories about well loved greyhounds in families! Beth in NC age 48 Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Re: Show of hands ? Please Well, as one who finds greyhound racing deplorable, although I don't mean to disrespect those who disagree...its just my personal feeling..., I so love to hear when they get a good home like the three of you have provided. They deserve it.> > > I am 58 yrs old I have 3 children 2 girls 39 and 37> > > and a son who is 35 .I also have 2 grandsons Kenny and> > > .
