Guest guest
Hello Maisa, I too, had a very difficult time starting out Bfing. Although I did not have all the problems you had afterwards. thank goodness! I don't know how you did it! All I remember is that my husband and I were walking zombies the first week of his life!! Anyway, my son (now 6 1/2 months) wouldn't nurse first either. I delivered him through a mid-wife and they are very PRO nursing. As soon as the baby was delivered they stuck him on my breast. He latched for a minute, then let go. The midwife said he'd do fine cuz he latched on well. Well he didn't. He was a sleepy baby, he'd latch, suck, suck, sleep. I went home 4 hours after delivery, thinking he latched well and would nurse without any problems once he was more alert! All he wanted to do was sleep when we got home, I couldn't wake him either! I was on the phone with the midwives for advice. They said as long as he has wet diapers, he's doing fine. Well, I knew he only latched for a second, suck, suck, then would fall asleep. He wasn't getting enough. After almost a whole day went by without seeing a wet diaper, we called the pediatrician. I think he was 3 days old then. The pediatricians checked his blood and it gave a reading that he " needed a snack " . They wanted to give him formula to nourish him. Ofcourse, I was devistated! Everything you read about breastfeeding, plus what I heard from the midwives, say not to introduce a bottle, and that your baby WILL be able to nurse. I felt like a failure! I was an emotional wreck. They were wonderful there though, I might add that I'm with KAISER. They told me that once we got some nourishment in him, he'd have more energy to nurse. I didn't believe them! I didn't want to give him a bottle, so we fed him through a feeding tube. I couldn't stand feeding him that way, he looked like he was starving, so I gave into the bottle. Before I left, they brought in a LC and they made me try and nurse. They saw that latched on very well, but would quit after 2 sucks. She said he will be fine, just to keep trying, keep pumping so my mile suplly would maintain, and give it time. Well, after that, I felt quite relieved because my son had something in his stomach. But boy, was I an emotional wreck! finally did nurse, and giving him a bottle at day 3 worked out for us cuz that weekend my mom stayed overnight and took care of ALL the feedings that night. I pumped every 2 hours, but I still got some MUCH NEEDED REST!! I know they say not to give a baby a bottle until atleast a month to avoid nipple confusion, but it was a godsend for us to start early. I'd have him nurse all day and get my husband to give him an evening feeding. I'd go to sleep 2 hours before the feeding which gave me 4 straight hours of sleep! How wonderful it is to get 4 precious hours of sleep ALL IN A ROW! Sorry this is so long...but I wanted to share my story. Whoever said BFing comes natural, who are they kidding? It's so nice to hear other horror stories. My bestfriend BF'd too, but she couldn't related cuz all here baby wanted to do was suck and stay latched on all the time! I wish I knew about this list when was born! I love it! Guest guest
Rene , Believe me I can relate to every single word in your story . Makes you feel like a failure? I was devastated, there I was trying to give my baby the best nutrition, and he was refusing it ! He was so tiny , and being a first time Mom made me inclined to think that if he doesn't get anything , he'll be very sick!! Now that that it is behind me , and we have a wonderful BFing relation , I can't help but think every time I sit to nurse him , that I was sooo close to loosing all this. My relationship with ds became even more special. Another good outcome - as you mentioned - , since he was introduced to the bottle so early , he never refuses to take it now . This was a life saver when I developed the mastitis and couldn't feed him directly from the breast and had to pump and dh fed him with the bottle. Plus , SLEEP !! Comes in handy when you NEED a couple of hours in a row ! Maisa Momy to AbdulRahman 2-11-
Guest guest
Rene, I had to give my dd a bottle 4 times on day 2 1/2 because she was jaundiced and I was engorged. It was hell to make the decision to give her a bottle but it saved our nursing relationship. I pumped and gave her a bottle of my milk after she stopped nursing for 12 hours when my milk came in. After four bottle of breastmilk she was energized and latched on the next morning and nursed for 13 months total. Every single nursing relationship is different and no one hard and fast rule works for everyone. I am glad to hear you survived your ordeal.
