and others:

I have little experience with restraining kids, so bear with me please..

My questions are: First, do you think that kids who "go off" should be restrained in a classroom where the rest of the students are supposed to receive instruction? If so, for how long and for how often? Second, if a child "goes off" in a more public area such as in the cafeteria, in the hall or outside, where should the child be taken? Should school personnel leave him there or should he be transported to another area? If so, where should he be taken?

I know that when I originally asked a few weeks ago about these kindof injustices towards our children it was hard for many to respond asit brought back old memories. It was easy for the child that is nolonger here to respond - he ended his life. This is not something I'want to' post about or wanted to even look at. After receivingseveral hundred responses from parents about this going on at theirschools ( I have them and they keep pouring in ), I then addedMandatory Jail Sentences for those that put our children into thiskind of Jeopardy into the Autism Reform Act of 2009. I'm sure mostall of you have seen the CNN reports :http://www.cnn. com/2008/ US/12/17/ seclusion. rooms/index. htmlMAKE THIS PUNISHABLE - Prison Sentence Automatic for exposing our kidsto this .. is within the Autism Reform ACT of 2009.http://www.change. org/ideas/ view/accept_ and_sign_ the_autism_ reform_act_ of_2009I don't even want to begin going into this as it brings back badmemories for many - but this is TODAY's TRUTH. It was the Truth theday I originally asked about Illegal Time Out across the Yahoo groups, and it will still be the truth tomorrow unless we do something aboutthis as a nation. WE CAN. To the 100's ofparents that responded offlist and to the 1000's that did on, Thankyou for being bold enough to tell me what, when, and where - now maybeCNN can use some of this information and uncover some of this. Liz,This is my own personal opinion - Sensory Break Rooms that are properly equippedand built to spec's that need to be made should be used BEFORE the child goes off !Generally there are signs one can see that the child is getting frustrated.. if a child doesend up in a position of danger to him/herself or others or is about to/or is in such a position as you stated Should be escorted away from the other children into a place wherethe child can calm down... now this definately doesn't meean they should go to;http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/12/17/seclusion.rooms/index.htmlRather, it means the child should be escorted from the room to a safe environment thatwill allow a Sensory Break..

generally this shouldn't take long for the child to then re-enterthe classroom. During the Sensory Break the child MUST be monitored at all times.. thatmeans someone watching through a door thats windowed. There are windows easily boughtthat make it hard to see out..but easy to see in.. these are the best IMO. The child needs a break.. so give it to him/her, but locking them up or using any kind of room with no windowsdoesn't allow proper supervision of the child and can lead to what happened in GA. .As that is not the first time. These rooms must include 'ventilation', 'windows', 'no locks on doors',be at least 8x10 min., and have 'sensory stimuli' available within them.. so the child can pullup a soft item to relax with, etc. . When a child starts going into tantrums and it appearsthat it's just to go to the sensory break room then an FBA needs to be done to address thisand

the BIP needs to be changed.. again IMO. Sorry for such a long answer to a short question ! ,

OK, , don't give me too much credit here. There is a lot that I don't know. That's why I signed up for this list .

Yes, I know about FBA's and PBIP's. I agree that school staff often do not follow the committee's planned interventions. I have seen sensory rooms. My question is, : Should the child be put in these rooms when they "go off"? Or do you, as a parent of a teenager, feel that the child should be on a mat in his ordinary classroom? Should he be exposed to "the public" e.d. the other kids, or should he be in room by himself? Help me out her, please.
