The

Autism Spectrum Assessment Clinic (ASAC),

located

in Coral Gables, Florida, provides comprehensive psychological evaluations to

children and adults to investigate the possibility of an autism spectrum

disorder (ASD). The purposes of the evaluation are to determine current level

of functioning, clarify diagnosis, and provide treatment recommendations. ASAC

includes a team of highly experienced professionals who specialize in

diagnosing or ruling out ASDs, including clinical and school psychologists,

doctoral level psychology students, behavior analysts, and consulting

clinicians from CARD who assist in the assessment process and who ensure that

individuals diagnosed with autism and their families are connected to CARD

IMPORTANT!!!

MUST

ALERT PARENTS WITH CHILDREN/ADULTS ON MEDWAIVER!!

I have listed a web site that families

can go to get information on the tier issue. This is time sensitive, because

many families received letters and they must respond within 10 days or they

lose their rights to continue with existing funding, while they appeal.

Here is a link that people should go to

and also get on their list to receive updates daily http://www.ffddnews.com

CARD serves both children and adults of all levels of intellectual functioning

who have autism, pervasive developmental disorders, autistic-like disabilities,

dual sensory impairments, or sensory impairments with other disabling

conditions. Their primary focus is to provide individualized, direct assistance

to these individuals and their families. Services include family support,

technical assistance and consultation, parent and professional training

programs, and public education activities. The dedicated members of The Society

of Bar and Gavel want to help raise funds for a program that provides these

free services to those families who are affected by autism and related

disabilities.

My name is Amy and I am the

Coordinator of Special Services at The Learning Center for the Deaf in

Massachusetts. I am happy to announce an upcoming conference,

“Signing on the Spectrum: Meeting the Needs of Deaf Children with

Autism.” TLC is proud to be the first school for the Deaf to

organize a national conference focusing exclusively on Deaf and hard of hearing

children who have autism. The goal of this conference is to bring

together professionals in the fields of Deaf education, communication disorders

and advocacy with experts in the fields of autism, behavior and special

education. The conference will be held October 24-25, 2008 in

Natick/Framingham, MA (20 miles west of Boston). I kindly ask you

to forward this message to colleagues and families who may have an interest in

attending this conference.

The stimulating two-day program will

provide educators, parents, therapists and others with valuable information regarding

the education, care and support of Deaf children with autism and their

families. Friday’s workshops will have an educator/professional

focus, while Saturday’s will focus on family’s needs and supports.

To see the conference agenda go to http://www.regonline.com/tlc.

Presentations include:

Language and communication:

Implications for Deaf Children with Autism

Differentiated Instructions When

Working with Deaf Children with Autism

Autism Through the Eyes of Deaf

Culture

Diagnosis and Assessment of Autism

in Deaf Children

We invite conference participants to

submit poster proposals by October 1st. Participating in this portion of

the conference will be an opportunity for attendees to share projects and

research they have completed in the area of Deafness and autism. We are

asking teachers, therapists, and other practitioners who work with Deaf

children with autism to present research or best practices. The posters

do not need to be data driven, although that is always a plus. Our goal

is to highlight the work that is already being done with these exceptional

children.

Poster topics include:

Teaching Chewing to a Deaf

Preschooler with Autism,

Using of Smart Board Technology in an

Elementary Class of Deaf Children with Autism, and Using PECS to

Develop Spontaneous Sign Language in a Deaf Child with Autism.

Exhibitors are invited to

participate as well. This event will be a wonderful opportunity for your

organization to highlight its programs and resources to a captive audience of

professionals, educators, and families who are committed to enriching the lives

of Deaf and hard of hearing learners with autism. Please contact me at amy_collins@... for

more information.

I encourage you to register for the

conference by Friday, September 12th, to save on conference registration fees.

To register, please visit http://www.regonline.com/tlc

I expect an outstanding event and

look forward to your participation. I hope to see you in October!
