I thought that it was the bacteria on the face that causes flare ups,

which is why we use antibiotic gels/creams to kill the bacteria. It's

also true that when our faces are oily, bacteria grow at a faster rate.

Washing frequently keeps the skin clean, and hence (relatively) free of

bacteria.
