Irene: The oxygen desat measures your oxygen at rest and also while

you are moving. My last one was done on a treadmill and at a very

slow pace to atart out and for as long as I could go. The treadmill

also inclined slightly while I was walking. In other words, when my

sats dropped below 80, they called it quits. This test enables them

to tell you how much 02 you need to be on to keep your sats up.

They increased my 02 as I needed it and found what level I needed.

With me, my sats drop as soon as I stand up! And, when I walk they

drop even more, and if I am talking they drop even more. Thus, the

need for full-time 02. I am on 3-4 liters at rest and up to 6 when

I am up moving around. I hope you can get this test. It will show

you what you need.

Irene,

This is the text-book definition for oxygen desaturation is:

Insufficient amounts of oxygen in the bloodstream. Desaturation can

occur when oxygen-poor (blue) blood from the right side of the heart

circulation mixes with oxygen-rich (red) blood in the left side of

the heart circulation and goes to the body. Normal oxygen saturation

in the arteries is 95 to 100 percent.

And the test is called an Exercise Test for Desaturation:

The exercise for desaturation test evaluates oxygen needs at rest

and during exercise. How it's done: Patients walk on level ground or

on a treadmill at a comfortable pace for a maximum of six minutes

per exercise period. Several six-minute walking exercise periods may

be required. Patients may be asked to wear oxygen during the testing

periods if their oxygen level is found to be low, either at rest or

with exercise. A pulse oximeter (device used to determine the amount

of oxygen in the blood) is placed on the earlobe or fingertip to

monitor blood oxygen levels.

Here its referred to as a six minute walk. Don't have any idea what

it's called in Canada, in English or French.
