A 5-session workshop for parents and their children, targeting early reading and early writing skills Guidance provided by creative professionals who care: Bonnie Keaton-Estroff, OTR/L & Wells, Ed.D. The purpose of this workshop is to teach school readiness skills to young children by guiding parents through the process of implementing research-based strategies. The workshop, which takes place over five one-hour sessions, allows parents and children to work together on developmental skills with the guidance of an occupational therapist and special education teacher. This workshop is appropriate for: • Typically-developing children • Children with learning disabilities • Children with sensory processing disorder • Children with mild developmental delays • Children with high-functioning autism Each session will begin with a brief warm-up activity, organizing the body to prepare for learning. The groups switch so everyone has an opportunity to participate in both activities. Targeted early literacy skills: • Manipulating sounds presented orally • Identifying patterns in written language • Understanding the relationship between sounds and symbols • Vocabulary development • Comprehending basic text Targeted early writing skills: • Body awareness and spatial relationship • Visual-perceptual skills • Shoulder stability and bilateral coordination • Small muscle development and functional grasp • Visual-motor and letter formation introduction The total cost of the workshop, including all five sessions of instruction, all of the materials, and a resource guide for parents outlining extension activities and educational research is $250. $50 non-refundable registration fee $200 payment for the remainder of the sessions (non-refundable after attending one session) Spaces are limited – Maximum class size will be 8 child/parent pairs.
