I am really glad you are all reading the emails and doing your research. You and your son or daughter do have a voice! You can do something about this. Here's how: · First, do your appeal on time. (within 10 days of receiving your letter) · Then go see your legislators. They are in your city right now in their office. (See the links below) · Be sure to take your son or daughter. · Tell them your story and how this is affecting your son or daughter. · Be respectful when you visit your legislator. · 1. Ask for their help - do not act angry with them. · 2. You will leave a NEGATIVE impression of all persons with disabilities if you take your frustrations out on them personally. · 3. Ask them when you could follow up to monitor their progress speaking to appropriate committee members. · 4. Be sure to tell them you and your son or daughter are registered voters. · 5. The House and Senate form committees to handle issues. The committees research and think of ideas on how to solve · a particular problem (like balancing their budget). They then write bills to create the changes they believe will solve the · problem. Your legislator may not have been on the committee that set up these changes but he or she does represent · you. They do know who is on the committee and they have access to those legislators and will tell them of your visit. The · committees do respond to the non committee legislators. · Take your budget and ask them to help you balance your budget! This will help them understand the full brunt of your problem. · They will have a visual picture of you and your son or daughter which is then tied to your personal story. · Next time they enter a discussion or have to vote on an issue; they will remember your story and meeting you in person. · If we all do this . . . . . All of the legislators will have a story about when one of you visited their office ! · All of the Advocacy Centers, Councils and Political groups cannot replace this personal contact. · Help your son or daughter stand up for themselves. They cannot do this without you. ADVOCATE ! · If your son or daughter is not registered to vote; Shame on you. You should change that immediately . . . (see below) Are you Registered to Vote? Here is a pamphlet on " Voting in Florida " A guide for Citizens with Disabilities. http://www.fddc.org/publications/_doc/Voting-in-Florida-A-Guide-for-Persons-with\ -Disabilities.pdf Don't know who your local legislators are?
