I think for Emma it is cyclical. This is the time her sleep lightens, she wakes up, > doesn't know where she is and cries out Have you tried a night light? Somebody on the list (Alison I think) suggested it to me to help with DS3's regular night waking, and I am still pathetically grateful for the suggestion!
