Guest guest
My rheumy wants me off of it too, I am currently taking 7.5mg. She told me she was worried more about me in the future. I think about ulcers later on a big issue for RA patients, especially with all the meds we take. Ok, I looked up side effects and this is what I got…. SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects of prednisone and other corticosteroids range from mild annoyances to serious, irreversible damage, and they occur more frequently with higher doses and more prolonged treatment. Side effects include retention of sodium (salt) and fluid, weight gain, high blood pressure, loss of potassium, headache and muscle weakness. Prednisone also causes puffiness of the face (moon face), growth of facial hair, thinning and easy bruising of the skin, impaired wound healing, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, worsening of diabetes, irregular menses, rounding of the upper back ( " buffalo hump " ), obesity, retardation of growth in children, convulsions, and psychiatric disturbances. The psychiatric disturbances include depression, euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and even psychotic behavior. “The only difference between a weed and a flower is judgment " - Author Unknown

Guest guest
Hi Jenni, I don't know the answer to your question, since I've never been on more than 10 mg and never developed the moon face. However, I can tell you that I gained 2 lbs for every mg of prednisone, and when I lowered down (I got as low as 6 mg at one time) the extra weight didn't go away with the lowered dose of pred. Hope you can find the magic amount! Guest guest
I don't know what is the acceptable amount of prednisone to be on long-term. I'm kind of mad at myself/my doctor. I was doing great on 2 mg/day and we decided that I should try and get off completely. I went down to 1(should have done 1 1/2) for a month and a whole host of symptoms came back. I had to bump back up to 10 and then start the slow taper again. Now I'm holding at 5 and still not back to where I was before trying to get off. Maybe another doctor would have thought 2 mg was acceptable. Of course, the goal is always to be drug-free, but that's not always possible. As far as moon face goes, I didn't get it this time with the RA. I was on very high doses - at least 20 mg/day and even did some intravenous prednisone. I guess everyone is different. gloria
Guest guest
Jenni, I got rid of moon face but not sure how low dose was when it went away! I surely have pictures of my moon face and did not care for it at all. I am guessing 5 mg. or lower.. I am totally off prednisone now. Guest guest
Basically, the face looks very bloated. Jerry had it really bad the last two MDA telethons, he went into the hospital to get off prednisone sometime this year, I am anxious to see how he looks this year.
