Guest guest
Serge, Peanuts are a legume and peanut products should not be tried until after symptoms subside, much later. Were your bananas ripe with brown spots? Whole nuts are highly advanced foodPapaya is an advanced fruit: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html > I have been on the diet since Jan. 1 2008, and I am struggling to find > ballance with the diet. > > Carol F. I spent the night up with gas, dry mouth and mouth cankers. I think the episode was caused by the peanut butter and maybe by the soup. I wonder if the sweetness of the squash is problematic in my case. Looking at what you ate yesterday, you're eating almost all fruits, high-sugar vegetables (like the winter squash) and peanut butter or pistachios. Are you a vegetarian? Is this why you aren't eating any meat or eggs? What about cooked vegetables, like zucchini, or green beans? What was in the winter squash soup? Peanuts are a legume, and have proved problematic for a number of people, so you might want to consider switching to almond or pecan butter. Were your bananas nice and ripe, with lots of brown spots? If not, they may have had too much starch in them. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I don't use squash frequently and usually eat low carb. steamed vegatables with fish and eggs every day and ocasionally a little meat. I will try pecan butter but have had no problems with almond butter so far. Guest guest
Serge, If you just started Jan. 1, it may be too early for baking with nuts. . Cnsult the link I gave you and note nut flour is on Stage 3 if you choose to follow that as a guide. It is not an official part of SCD and Elaine was a little vague about specifying exactly when each food is to be started and suggested keeping a food journal, introducing one food at a time and in small amounts. It looks like you unintentionally went for broke and the jackpot hit you:-)Tha bananas were ripe. Guest guest
Hi Serge, As others have suggested, the " stages " list on Pecanbread.com is very helpful. I started SCD last July and spent the first couple of weeks eating a lot of food that was LEGAL (like whole nuts) but without understanding the idea that, in starting the diet, you need to get into a frame of mind that you are trying to give your body the most basic, easiest to digest food possible, while also trying to give it high levels of nutrition. (Think of how babies are introduced to solid food - you're just like a new baby with a healing gut!) The BTVC book is not very clear about how important it is to GRADUALLY add foods and what types. However, so many of the wonderful SCD old-timers (and some of us newer fanatics) can give us a lot of guidance in terms of what foods work best early on. Did you follow the intro diet for the first few days? Did you find that your symptoms got better? If so, you might want to try going back to the intro diet (dry curd cottage cheese/DCCC, eggs, diluted apple cider or legal grape juice, homemade gelatin, homemade chicken soup with pureed carrots, broiled beef patty, broiled fish, cheesecake), then just add Stage 1 foods VERY SLOWLY (like add half a banana and wait 2-3 days to see if any of your symptoms come back). I know it's really hard but if you can see how your body reacts, it will help you learn how to listen to it as you expand your food choices. I have been on the diet for more than 6 months now and still can only eat whole nuts very occasionally. The nut butters (except peanut) are good to start with, and recipes that use nut butters instead of nut flour are good ones to use earlier in the diet. I also find that I have to watch my fruit consumption. It's easy to eat lots of it but it can be hard for our tender, healing guts to digest. Best of luck, Kathy > > I have been on the diet since Jan. 1 2008, and I am struggling to find > ballance with the diet. > Serge Duguay > Ottawa, Ontario > > SCD 22 days >
Guest guest
Hi Serge. I’d suggest keeping a very simple diet for awhile – in the beginning all I could handle was lots of chicken soup, soft veggies on the beginning list and only cooked apples with no skin. No nuts and nothing raw. Like many of us, I was so ravenous from loosing lots of weight I overdid it on the almond flour muffins and nuts. I was very bored with such limited food choices, but vowed I would stick it out and see what happens. I also had a variety of rashes on my face (I had those for years) very bad joint pain, the blah’s and of course, carb withdrawl which left me depressed and irritable. I was grumpy during the early period. Lot of baths w/Epsom salts. Give yourself sometime as it sounds like it all part of the detox process. I’ll be on the diet for 1 year in a couple of weeks and I can’t believe how my digestion functions so quietly and perfectly – I guess comparing it to years of problems I am finally balanced. I have lot of energy and feel fantastic. As some of say – you didn’t get this way overnight so be patient. You’ll see progress and can bump up to more advanced foods which is very encouraging – I think you need to get into the yogurt program ASAP even if slowly. SO hang in there and I am sure you will feel better soon. CD – 2 years SCD – 1 year
