Guest guest
Sue This could be flu plus movement of the cathter in the urethra which can cause slight bleeding, remember a little bit of blood can look bad. However don't hesitate to keep on at the medics to check for urine infection etc. After laparoscoptic surgery! Hello! My husband had laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer, 11 days ago. Up until 2 days ago, he was feeling awesome - energetic, walking on the treadmill, in no pain and just waiting for the catheter to be removed this Thursday (28th). A couple of days ago, he started feeling nauseated all the time. Excuse my bluntness, but he felt he had to pee, poop and throw up all at the same time. Tonight he had a tiny tinge of blood coming down the tube of his catheter. His temperature is fine. We called the Urology Ward where he stayed and a nurse talked to the both of us and thought maybe it was the flu as they had an outbreak in the ward beside his. Maybe it's the flu, but did anyone else experience this? He was doing so well. I even thought it was the antibiotics making his stomach sick but he finished them two days ago. Yesterday, he was lethargic and didn't want to use the treadmill - which is rare for him. I guess I'm just scared. Any thoughts or experiences like this? Thanks for listening, Sue No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 8.5.432 / Virus Database: 271.1.1/2645 - Release Date: 01/25/10 19:36:
Guest guest
Sue - My humble advice, get him back to the doctor. It is unlikely 11 days after surgery that something "let loose", but you don't want to take a chance. Make sure his blood pressure doesn't start to fall (blood loss). I am quite surprised that he still has a catheter after 11 days. Mine was out in 3 or 4 days, as I recall. Hopefully he hasn't picked up a bladder infection wearing the catheter so long. Please post a followup, hopefully he is feeling better. To: ProstateCancerSupport Sent: Tue, January 26, 2010 10:04:13 AMSubject: Re: After laparoscoptic surgery! Guest guest
Sue : I had a radical surgery having mind remove in March 2009. I would lay odd it could be the cather causing the sickness because on the second week with the cather I was feeling like the flu and I also vomited. The body trys to throw off a foreign object in the body and will make you sick. I have had this twice to happen and also your bladder is spasm causing you to feel like you need to urinate. The blood could be the tube has made you sore and leaking. Use some neosporin on the tube to lubicate. Be sure to get some medicine for bladder spasm even having the cather remove. It sure will help. Hope this will help some. Guest guest
Hello, Thanks for your great answers and concerns. Mike had a better day yesterday. He had no stomachaches whatsoever. I'm not really sure what happened but I think he just got scared. He woke me at 2:00am and asked if he should go to the E.R. That's totally unlike him as he hates hospitals. He said he had stomach cramps and there was a slight tinge of blood coming down his tube. I called the Urology Ward and Mike spoke to a nurse, calmed down, went to sleep and awoke feeling fine. I'm keeping a close eye on him. There was no other blood, his urine is clear and his stomach cleared up. I'm wondering if he's terrified of getting his results tomorrow - Thursday. Yes, he has had the catheter in too long. The standard practice with his surgeon is that he have it for one week. Unfortunately, Mike's first surgery was cancelled due to a small fire outside the hospital. Totally bizarre, but they had to re-sterilize the O.R. So Mike was supposed to have surgery on the Monday and have the catheter removed the following Tuesday. His surgery was moved to the following Saturday and the first available date to get the catheter out was this Thursday, due to the fact that his surgeon had to change all his surgery dates and was operating nonstop. Tomorrow at 10:00 (Thursday) we have an appointment with his surgeon. It could be he's frightened. He had heart surgery 5 years ago and everything seemed to go wrong. He had to even stay in the hospital an extra week due to arrythmia issues. But he worked hard and his heart is in good shape now. After his prostate surgery, his arms were swollen and he thought he was going into heart failure. The nurse reassured him that this was just a build-up of fluid from the surgery and sure enough it went away after a day. I think he's re-living his heart problem days. I'm keeping a close watch. Thanks for all your help, Sue__________________________________________________
