Several doctors told me that Prednisone leaches calcium from the bones and can cause osteoporosis. When I was first put on Prednisone I was told to take extra calcium and Vitamin D. I started by using Cod Liver Oil to get the Vitamin D but was then told that this gave me too much Vitamin A so I switched to Caltrate+D. God bless.

Subject: bone loss from pred

I didn't know that prednisone caused bone loss. Is this true? What are the long term effects of Vioxx?

My Rheumy told me that I can't stay on Prednisone. He wants me to get off of it completely and seems to think that the Methotrexate that I just started will work, but not as well as

Prednisone. Right now, Prednisone is my best friend at 15 mg a day.

I am cutting down to 10 mg now and 500 mg of Naproxen twice a day.

So far the Methotrexate has not started working, but then I just started taking it 3 weeks ago.

Why did he say that?

How old are you and how long have you been on 15 mg?

I can't move well without it.

Went off it completely, but now am on 5 mg.

A lot of my symptoms went away...

My doc has said that long term he doesn't like people to be on more

than 5 - 7 mg per day. I'm currently taking 10 mg and have been off

and on that amount for the past year. He said it wasn't good to

stay at that level long term and wants me to cut it back. I was

down to 6 mg at the beginning of April and starting having trouble

so went back up to 10.

Long term too much pred can cause a lot of problems - as well as

osteoporosis, it can contribute to heart disease and diabetes. It

seems like pretty much any drug that helps us can also hurt us as

well.
