Guest guest
I was wondering what most people did to try and incorporate a bit of exercise in their lives? I am currently going to yoga but find when there is a bad falre up it is harder on the joints and harder to keep my balance. Guest guest
Hi , I tried Yoga, but guess it was not for me. For exercise, I use a recumbent bike -- they are not at all like the older exercse bikes, you sit and your legs extend forward--very comfortable, great seat, and excellent aerobic exercise. I also do daily hand/finger exercises I found on a Canadian health website for arthritis. I do these exercises while I am riding my bike. Once I do them, all morning stiffness is gone or lessened substantially. > I was wondering what most people did to try and incorporate a bit of exercise in their lives? Since I was just diagnosed with RA in June of this year; I haven't seen the doc more than twice so far.... He told me to "stay active". When I go back on Sept 7th, I have a list of things to ask him. As soon as I started the Prednisone I was able to resume all previous activity, whereas I assumed I had lost all of my muscle in my forearms and hands. I am able to walk a mile, although I still have a hard time lifting things and opening things. One big side effect that I have (which is from the MTX) is that I am lightheaded all of the time when I am standing or walking, and it's worse in the evenings. I heard that Tai Chi is beneficial for RA sufferers. Becky

On days I don't give riding lessons I try to walk three and a half miles every morning. Here in Phoenix, it is too hot to walk outside in the summer, so the malls open at six am for exercise walkers. It takes me a little over 45 minutes each morning to walk three and a half miles. On days I have riding lessons, I get plenty of exercise chasing kids and horses around. Guest guest
Sharon, you don't have any problems riding?? That is good news - I used to ride as a teenager all the time but have not over the last 10 years. Before I was diagnosed with RA I was planning on getting back into it but was unsure, I've aready given up running so this is great news! To everyone else: Thank you so much for all of your responses. I bought a book on pilates today which I hope will help - it is one where you use the big exercise ball - it looks like it might be doable. There is the Arthritis Conference here in Edmonton next month - one of the seminars is on Exercise and Yoga and there is another on Foods that can help. Hope it will all be as informative as everyone here seems to be! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Wertz Rheumatoid Arthritis Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2004 10:28 PM Subject: Re: Exercise On days I don't give riding lessons I try to walk three and a half miles every morning. Guest guest
Hi Becky, There is a video & dvd out by an arthritis doctor it's ' Tai Chi for Arthritis' by Lamm It's very good if you are not very active as it's gentle. It does work, I started with it and can now manage some easy Pilates stuff. Hope this helps, Lynne
Guest guest
> Sharon, > > you don't have any problems riding?? I haven't been able to ride for more than about 20 minutes at a time for about ten years. I teach riding, driving, and train horses to drive. For years I bred belgian heavy draft horses, but when my old stallion died a couple of years ago, I called it quits with the breeding. Now I drive my drafts and half drafts in cart or surrey. I used to ride hunter/jumpers and show, but now I teach 4h and pony club kids how to do it. Sharon

Guest guest
Taking care of my cat and dog gets me a good bit of exercise. The dog always seems to have to go when I am upstairs. When I can't do the stairs easily, I do the little kids' slide down on your tush descent. Works and it is fun too. Makes the dog look at me funny though, LOL. Guest guest
Hi Pris, What channel is the " Sit and be Fit " show on? Hopefully, it's one I have in my basic cable package. Oh, and pigs are cool. I haven't been to the site yet, but 12yodd collects pig paraphenelia and loves them. We have a stupid rule in our subdivision about not owning any. I just hate how invasive folks have become in other people's freedoms sometimes. We're not even supposed to have a clothesline and it's not like I live in the " city " either. More later, after I view your site. Happy day, Nita I was wondering what most > > people did to try and incorporate a bit of exercise in their lives? > > > > > > I watch " Sit and be Fit " on TV every day....it is a show for people with > arthritis or MS. > Pris > > > > Does your pig need a brush-up in manners or obedience? > Or bored and wanting to learn tricks? > " Potbellied Pig Behavior and Training " book > www.valentinesperformingpigs.com

Go to sitandbefit.com......tapes are available, and this show practically saved my life! Not all the exercises are for sitting....many are for those of us who can stand. I think it's great your daughter likes pigs! I have adored them all my life. Interestingly, pigs in general get arthritis so bad it shortens their lives... Oinks, Pris Bored pig? ANY age pig can learn tricks and obedience the EASY way! Or, even become a star. Guest guest
Exercise is great! And I think really helpful for people who suffer from RA. It makes me feel like I have some control over parts of my body that are not affected, it makes my muscles stronger to compensate for the weaknesses I do have and it helps my overall mood and attitude. As an ex-runner, I really mourn losing the ability to run and now even take walks (the RA is mainly in my feet). But I have a recumbent bike, I do Pilates, lift weights, work out on machines as often as possible. It's not the same as running and the weight doesn't come off as easily. But it's better than giving in. I'm seriously into the denial thing. Sometimes I think it helps. gloria
